Composition or Organization

in Art
 Composition or organization in art is the technique of combining
together all the elements of art to produce a harmonious, balanced
and proportioned beautiful work of art.
 Artists utilize organizing principles to develop forms that inform.
 Whether analyzing or composing artwork, one must have a
complete understanding of how art principles are created.
PRINCIPLES IN COMPOSITION
REPETITION – RYTHYM - EMPHASIS
 EMPHASIS - It refers to the need for an artist to create a focal point
within an artwork.
 It is the regular occurrence of an element which serves for emphasis.
 This artistic point is an essential part of a work of art, and the
viewer’s eye should be drawn to that area.
 The psychological implication that matters is that repetition provides
security.
 RYTHYM - It refers to the visual pattern within a work of art.
Models within an artwork are created by repeating certain colors,
lines or shapes in specific areas.
CONTRAST - MOVEMENT
 CONTRAST - It is the sudden appearance of the unexpected
element which serves for interest, challenge and adventure.
 MOVEMENT – it is the way that an eye moves throughout the
work of art. In this work of art, our eye move up through the pattern
in the rippling surface of the water to the two paddlers. An artist
creates a visual movement to drive the eye to the focal point of the
artwork.
VARIATION
 This serves as the highlight or accent of the art work.
 This is accomplished by using different color, lines and shapes
within an artwork to make key areas stand out.
 Artists use this idea to direct the viewer’s to a place within the art
that he or she wants to emphasize.
BALANCE
 This refers to the arrangement of elements according to distance in
relation to the focal point which is the center.
 It refers to the symmetry of opposing visual forces.
 It is created in a work of art when colors, forms, shapes or textures
are combined harmoniously.
BALANCE : KINDS OF BALANCE
 FORMAL/ SYMMETRICAL/ CLASSICAL BALANCE – the
distance from the left is equal to the distance to the right in relation
to the focal center point.
 INFORMAL / ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE – it is attained
when objects of different forms or shapes or numbers are arranged
on the left—right side or up—down yet appears to have equal
weight.
PROPORTION
 This refers to the arrangement of elements according to size in
relation to the other elements.
 This principle is created when the sizes of elements in an artwork
are combined harmoniously. The artist usually tries to make all of
the parts in a composition relate logically to each other to depict the
human form within the proper proportion.
HARMONY
 When all the elements blend together creating unity in the artwork.
 This is accomplished by using similar types of geometric shapes,
lines or colors within a work of art to create a unified composition.
 Using various cool or warm colors would help produce a
harmonious work of art.
