Ms. Cassandra, my Grade 2 pupil friend is
having a difficulty in adding two digit
number. Can you help us how to find it?

Don’t worry Maya. I’ll help your friend how

to add two digit number. As we learned, in
addition….it is just putting things
together.

Example… There are 44 grade two pupils in

the morning class and 35 pupils in the
afternoon class. How many grade one pupils
are there all in all?

Let us find the answer using the two

methods.

A. Short Method
44
+ 35

Group the addends according to their place

value 4 4
1. Add the ones digits: + 3 5
9
4 4
+ 3 5
2. Add the tens digits: 7

There are 79 Grade Two pupils in all.

B. Long Method or Expanded form

1. Group the number or digit according to their

value and place value.
44 = 40 + 4
35 = 30 + 5

2. Add the digit or number, start with ones

44 = 40 + 4
35 = 30 + 5
= 70 + 9
= 79
So, 44 + 35 are 79

Just remember, when adding large

numbers, start adding the digits that is in
the ones place.
