Almost everything we see is

matter and it is important to

classify them. Matter can be
classified based on the
distribution of their properties
and composition throughout the
material.
If the composition and
properties are uniform
throughout, the material is
taken as homogeneous. If not
then it is said to be
heterogeneous.
Homogeneous materials have only
one phase, they are intimately
mixed that the individual particles
cannot be seen by the naked eyes.
They appear to be made up only of
one or the same kind. Homo means
the same, while hetero means
different
are always homogeneous. It
is further classified into
elements and compounds.
The water that we drink is a
compound. It is made up of
elements hydrogen and
oxygen.
cannot be broken down
into simpler substances.
Elements in itself is very
simple, it is made up only
of one kind that no
physical or chemical
means can further change
Compounds result from the combination,
in a definite proportion by mass, of two or
more elements of different kinds. The
water we drink is a compound. Water has
properties very different from the
combining elements. Water is a colorless
liquid at room temperature, while both
hydrogen and oxygen are colorless gases at
room temperature.
