CHALLENGES/RECOMMENDATIONS
 A major constraint is inadequate manpower: refer to Ayida Panel recommendation of 100,000 staff ,
50 years ago as against current level of 2000
 The Organisation does not get any financing from the service wide budgetary allocation. Only staff
salaries and allowances are borne by government. The burden of overhead costs and financing of
the few projects embarked upon are on the paltry amount accruing from service charges.
 Insecurity. This seriously hampered SON’s operations as many places in the country are insecurity
prone areas. The organisation now operates in all the States of the federation.
 Need to sensitize Nigerians on the importance of quality in relation to Cost and safety and ensuring
public gets value for money
 Need to accredit and digitalized Product certification Scheme to ISO 17065 and digitization of
MANCAP processes for efficiency and transparency
 Need for Increased Capital financing for SON digitalization drive, Laboratory and Metrology
Equipment. Government to look into SON capital vote so that the organisation can keep abreast of
new technology in information technology, testing and calibration.
