Traffic Engineering
• “deals with planning, geometric design and traffic operation
of roads and streets and highways, their networks, terminals
abutting lands, relationship with other modes of
transportation for achievement of safe, efficient and
convient movement of person and goods.”-ITE(Institute of
Transport Engineering)
• Basically concern with flow management and Techniques to
achieve safe & efficient movement goods, people and
commodity
Objectives
• Well plan traffic system in order to decrease congestion,
parking problems
• Efficient, free and rapid flow of flow entities
• Better systematic design and control of transport system
• Increase performance characteristics
• Decrease the road accidents and conflicts
Scope of Traffic Engineering
• Traffic characteristics
• Traffic study and analysis
• Traffic operation, control and regulation
• Planning and analysis
• Facility design
• Traffic administration and management (3 ‘E’s)
• Continual research
Traffic engineering deals with
• Traffic flow and management
• Signal designs
• Intersection
• Pedestrian walkways and crossing
• Traffic controlling devices(traffic signs and rules)
• Pavement markings
• Parking and
• Transport safety
Studies needed for traffic engineering
• Traffic volume study
• Speed study
• Origin and destination
• Parking study
• accidents
After these studies data analysis, modelling(future
predictions), planning, ,simulation of problem solving traffic
flow are made in course of traffic engineering.
Transportation Engineering
• is overall development and establishment of projects for solving
the difficulties involve in sector of safe efficient and convient
movement
• Traffic engineering is part of transport engineering
• To plan, design, operate and maintain transport system
• Concerned with development
• Concerned with challenge of developing both network link and
terminals, regarding land use, environment and other impact of
these facilities
• Deals with suitable mode selection along with land use and
geography
Components of Transportation
• Fixed facilities : structures requires for the efficient
transportation like Railways, road, airports, bridges, station,
tunnels
• Flow entities (modes): conveyance that are use to support
mobility of passenger and fright
• Control system : proper management of traffic with set of
rules and regulations.
 Network
Flows
Scope of transportation engineering
• Transportation planning
• Geometric design
• Pavement design
• Traffic engineering
• Material construction and maintenance
• Financial analysis
• Accident analysis
