DEFINITION
A diet may be defined as the kinds of food on which a person or
group lives.

A balanced diet is defined as one
which contains a variety of foods
in such quantities and proportions
that the need for energy, amino
acids, vitamins, minerals, fats,
carbohydrate and other nutrients is
adequately met for maintaining
health, vitality and general well-
being and also makes a small
provision for extra nutrients to
withstand short duration of
leanness .
A balanced diet has become an
accepted means to safeguard a
population from nutritional
deficiencies

Balanced diet is diet that consists of all important nutrients. These


nutrients are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and
fiber etc

. These proportions vary for each individual because everyone has


different metabolic rates and levels of activity

Each of these food groups provides some,

PRINCIPLES OF BALANCE DIET

In constructing balanced diet, the following principles should be


borne in mind :
(a) First and foremost, the daily requirement of protein should be
met. This amounts to 10-15 per cent of the daily energy intake,
(b) Next comes the fat requirement, which should be limited to 15-30
per cent of the daily energy intake
(c) Carbohydrates rich in natural fibre should constitute the
remaining food energy.
(d) The requirements of micronutrients should be met.

DIET
A balance diet meet the nutritional need of individual and family.
Well balance diet provides carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins,
minerals and water.
It is cost effective, cheap and easily available.
Nutritive values of food is improved and enhanced by sprouting and
fermenting.

planning well balance diet.
It provides variety in meals.
Advice to eat fresh food in the form of salads.
Include vegetables and fruits in daily diet.

Finances
The Food Standards Agency states that those living under low-
income restrictions eat less fresh vegetables , which often cost more
than less nutritious foods.
Eating Disorders
Eating disorders such as anorexia affect diet and eating habits, those
who have eating disorders are at an increased risk of anemia, hair
loss.

Stress causes a variety of behaviors in some, ranging from not
eating to overeating. For some, stress causes upset stomach or
intestinal disorders like diarrhea or constipation.

Disease Prevention
Eating a balanced diet is the easiest way to protect yourself from
many of the diseases associated with aging, including diabetes and
heart disease.
Meeting Nutritional Needs
Healthy foods contain vitamins and minerals that boost immunity
and serve as natural protection from many common illnesses.
