Input Devices
 Input device is any peripheral (piece of computer hardware) equipment to provide data
and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer or other
information appliance.

 Input device Translate data from form that humans understand to one that the computer
can work with.

 It allows users to communicate and feed instructions and data to computers for
processing, display, storage and/or transmission.

 Most common input devices are keyboard , scanner and mouse.

Examples :
 Keyboard
 Mouse
 Scanner
 Light pen
 Barcode Reader
 Microphone
 Touchscreen
 Joystick
 Webcam
Keyboard
 The keyboard is the main input device of the computer that is used most often.

 The keyboard is used to perform all typing tasks on the computer.

 Users can feed characters, numbers and other special characters to computer with the
help of keyboard.

 The layout of keys in the keyboard is similar to the layout of keys in typewriter
machine .
 A standard keyboard usually has 102-105 keys.

 The QWERTY keyboard has 6 types of keys :

1)Indicators – 3 lights
2)Function keys
3)Alphanumeric Keys
4)Control keys
5)Number keys
6)Navigation keys

There are 12 Function keys labeled as F1, F2, F3……..F12 on the

keyboard and they perform special task .
The control key is often used for commands related to manipulating data (like copy,
paste, and undo).

• The Alt key is frequently used for navigating menus and interfaces.

•The Alt key acts as a modifier, altering the behavior of the subsequent key you press.

For example, pressing Alt + F4 simultaneously in many programs allows you to close
the current window or application.
Mouse
 The mouse is also the main input device , with which the pointer on the
computer screen is controlled. That is why it is also called a pointing
device.

 Mouse is used to open, close, drag and drop files, icons on a computer.

 The use of the mouse has increased a lot with the introduction of GUI
(Graphic User Interface).

 An optical mouse is one of the most common types of the mouse for a
desktop computer that connects to the USB port, which is called a USB
mouse.
Scanner
 A scanner is used to scan documents and enter them into the computer in digital form.

 Scanner is used to feed data and instructions directly from paper to computer.

 Computer extracts text from the captured Digital image of the paper with the help of
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Software.

 The scanned document can be saved as an image on the computer and can be edited
also .
Flatbed scanners are the most common type
of scanner.

They are called “flatbed” because the

document is placed on a flat surface for
scanning.

Flatbed scanners can scan documents of

various sizes and are generally more
versatile than sheetfed scanners.
Light pen
 It works just like a mouse and It’s a pointing device that
can help us to touch any icon on the screen and open it.
It’s connected to the monitor.
 It has a tip with light which helps to detect the location of
the pen on the screen.
 Its pen-like shape makes it very easy to use.
Uses of Light Pen

•Graphic Designs: It is widely used in graphical representation to draw directly on

screen.

• Highlighting: It’s used to point to any image on the screen or highlight and edit text.

•Locator: It is used to pin the location or select the point or icons on the screen and can
be used in certain applications.

•Presentation: Used for displaying or identifying or pointing something in presentations

.

•Painting: It is a flexible way to draw digital art with the help of a light pen.
Barcode Reader
 This is an input device that is used to read the code hidden in the lines of the
barcode.
 A barcode is a vertical (permanent) line of black colour, in which a lot of
information is hidden: product name, product price, batch number, company name,
etc.
Microphone
 A microphone is an input device developed by Emile Berliner in 1877.
 It is used to convert sound waves into electrical waves or to input sound into
computers.
 It captures sound by converting sound waves into an electrical signal, which can be
digital or analogue.
 It allows to capture audio and transmit it to various devices, such as computers,
amplifiers, or recording equipment.
Types of microphones
Touch screen
 A touch screen is an electronic display screen that is
also an input device.
 A user interacts with the computer, tablet, smartphone
or touch-controlled appliance by using hand gestures
and fingertip movements to tap pictures, moving
elements or type words on the screen.
 An Android phone is a simple example of a touch
screen, as a touch screen is available in most Android
phones. You don’t need a separate mouse or keyboard
to run it.
Joystick
 It is a hand-held input device used to control the
movement or actions of a digital object on a computer
screen.
 It typically consists of a handle or a lever that can be
tilted or pushed in different directions to provide input
to a computer or a gaming console.
 It is most commonly used in gaming (joystick used for
gaming is also known as gamepad ).
Webcam
 A webcam is an input device.
 A webcam is a camera that one use to take pictures or
video conferences by connecting it to computer or laptop.
 One can connect the webcam to computer with a cable, or
can also use a wireless webcam.
 We use this device to capture real-time images and
connect to a computer.
 It is either built in to the computer (e.g. laptop) or it is
connected through an USB cable.

This type of webcam is built which can be clipped onto
in computer . It is usually something Solid like laptop or
Installed in the laptop. monitor. This is a USB webcam
connected usually on a desk
close to the computer .
