OBJECTIVES:

 Discuss metals and nonmetals.

 Differentiate metals and nonmetals.
 Cite the importance of metals and
nonmetals in our daily life.
ACTIVITY:
Identify the following properties if it is Metal or Nonmetal.

Low density Brittle High density

Shiny Good conductor Bad Conductor
Solid Hard Dull
METAL NONMETAL
WHAT IS
METAL?
METALS
• All metals are shiny
• With the exception of mercury, metals are generally
solid at room temperature and pressure.
• Solids metals are malleable.
• Metals are ductile.
• Most metal have high melting and boiling point.
• Metals are good conductors of electricity.
WHAT IS
NONMETAL?
NONMETAL
• Are not lustrous (in their solid forms)
• Are either gases or volatile liquids at room
temperature. Some nonmetals can be solid at room
temperature, but they have very low melting points
--- except for carbon in the form of a diamond.
• Are brittle solids. They break easily.
• Have low melting and boiling points.
• Are poor conductors of electricity.
BY PAIR: Give at least 5 examples
of metals and 5 examples of
nonmetals that can be found in their
house or inside the school.
IDENTIFY IF IT IS METAL OR NONMETAL.

1. The element Iron- _________

2. A brittle solid- ____________
3. The red object inside electrical wires -__________
4. Objects that can be attracted to magnets-_______
5. The element chlorine-_____________
