ANATOMY OF CLAVICLE

PRESENTED BY: ARSHIYA MUDASSIR

1ST SEMESTER DPT

CLAVICLE

- It is derived from latin word named “CLAVICULA’ which

means “LITTLE KEY”.

- It is modified long bone which connects upper limb to

axial skeleton and is placed horizontially .

- An s-shaped bone with two main ends : the medial

(sternal) end and lateral (acromial) end.

- Has a cylindrical part which we can call “SHAFT”.

- Medially it articulates with sternum and 1 st coastal

cartilage and laterally with acromion process of
scapula.

-
SIDE DETERMINATION:

LATERNAL END : It is flat. (acromial end) , this part further articulates

with the clavicular notch of mandubrium sterni. It also conatains a large
facet ( for articulation with manubrium of the sternum at
sternoclavicular joint .
MEDIAL END : It is large and quadrilateral. (sternal end) , this part
further articulates with medial margian of acromion process.

It also coordinates with with acromion of scapula by acroioclavicular

joint .

SHAFT : Slightly curved , two side one is convex and other is convex.

Medially it is convex and is 2/3.

Laterally it is concave and is 1/3.

MUSCLES AND LIGAMENTS ATTACHED:

The clavicle serves as an important sight for

muscle and ligaments attachments:

Deltoid muscle, trapezius muscle,

subclavius muscle, sternocleidomastoid
muscle are the muscles which clavicle
holds.

Sternoclavicular ligament ,costoclavicular

ligament ,coracoclavicular ligament,

Capsular ligament : acromioclavicular joint

capsule and sternoclavicular joint capsule
Functions of muscles:

-Deltoid muscle : Thick triangular muscle covering the shoulder joint and helps
you move your arms in different directions. They also protects and stabilize
your shoulder joint .

-Trapezius muscle: Triangular muscle extending over the back of the neck and
shoulders and moving the head and shoulder blade.

-Subclavius muscle: This small muscle originates from first rib and cartilage ,
its assists in stabilizing the clavicle and depressing the shoulder gridle
.
-sternocleidomastoid muscle: This muscle helps in neck flextion , rotation and
lateral flextion.

Functions of ligaments:

Sternoclavicular joint :These ligaments joins sternoclavicular joint which articulates between
sternum and clavicle.

Costoclavicular joint : This ligament connects the clavicle to the first rib and its cartilage ,
providing stability to sternoclavicular joint and limiting the excess movement of clavicle.

Coracoclavicular ligament: It consists of conoid and trapezoid ligament , it also connects clavicle
to the coracoid process of scapula , providing stability to the acromioclavicular joint .
