ANATOMY

NAME : NOMAN

TOPIC : SCAPULA
SCAPULA:
• It is also called the shoulder blade or shoulder
bone
• Scapula is large ,flattened and mobile
bone
LOCATION:
• It is attached to the posterior side of the thorax
• Superior side of the scapula is attached to the second rib
• And its inferior side is attached to the seventh rib
TARGETED AREAS:

SURFACES:

• Posterior surface
• Anterior surface
• superio-lateral surface
PROCESSES/ PROJECTIONS:

• Spinous process
• Acromion process
• Coracoid process
BORDERS:

• Medial border
• Lateral border
• Superior border
SURFACES
Posterior surface and muscle attachments:
• Posterior surface is rough
• A bony growth arises from medial side and goes to the lateral side called
spinous process or spine of the scapula which makes acromion
• The spinous process divides the posterior side into two fossa
1. Supra-spinatus fossa
2. Infra-spinatus fossa
SUPRA-SPINATUS FOSSA :
• To which the supraspinatus muscle is attached
INFRASPINATUS FOSSA:
• To which the infraspinatus muscle is attached
SPINOUS PROCESS:
• On the superior surface of the spinous process the trapezium muscle is
attached
• On the inferior surface on the spinous process is attached
ANTERIOR SURFACE :
• On the anterior surface we have a concave like structure called the
subscapular fossa
• To which the sub-scapular muscle is attached
SUPERO-LATERAL SURFACE:
• Glenoid cavity is present
• It’s a pear shaped structure
• Above the glenoid cavity a tubercle is present called the supra-glenoid
tubercle on which the long head of bicep muscle is attached
• Below it a tubercle is present called the infra-glenoid tubercle ,to which the
long head of triceps muscle is attached
• Supra-scapular notch is present on the base of the coracoid process
• In this notch a ligament is present called the supra-scapular transverse ligament
• Above this ligament an artery passes called the supra-scapular artery
• Below this ligament a nerve passes called supra-scapular nerve
ACROMION PROCESS:
• Acromion process attached to the clavicle and makes a joint called the acromioclavicular joint
CORACOID PROCESS:
• Three muscles are attached to the coracoid process
• Short head of bicep
• Pectoris minor
• Coraco-brachialis muscle
BORDER:
• MEDIAL BORDER MUSCLES:
1. Levator muscle
2. Rhomboid minor muscle
3. Rhomboid major muscle
4. Latissimus dorsi muscle
• LATERAL BORDER MUSCLE:
1. Teres minor muscle
2. Teres major muscle
• SUPERIOR BORDER MUSCLE:
Coraco-acromion ligament connects the acromion and coracoid
FRACTURES OF THE SCAPULA:
• The scapula is rarely fractured , and the reason is because numerous muscles are attached
to it
ABNORMALITIES IN SCAPULA:
1. DROPPED SCAPULA:
• The scapula is dropped downward because paralyzed or waste of trapezius
muscle and elevator muscle
WINGED SCAPULA:
• When the scapula is moved posteriorly
• Winged scapula is due to paralyzed or waste of serratus anterior
muscle
