PROBLEM STATEMENT
The corrosion problem in the naval industry and the lack of
economical and organic solutions to it

01
Persistent corrosion undermines naval infrastructure integrity.

02
Corrosion compromises naval vessels' operational readiness.

03 Inadequate anti-corrosion materials/most of them being expensive

and non-sustainable hinder naval industry efficiency.

04 Addressing corrosion is paramount for prolonging naval equipment lifespan.

CORROSION IN NAVAL INDUSTRY

01 Electrochemical reactions with seawater trigger corrosion, compromising metal

integrity in naval vessels.

02 Salt-laden air and moisture create conducive environments for corrosion on exposed metal
surfaces.

03 Galvanic corrosion arises from the interaction of dissimilar metals in

the presence of an electrolyte like seawater.

04 Microbial activity in marine environments accelerates corrosion through biofouling and microbial-induced
corrosion (MIC).

.
PREVENTION OF CORROSION

01 Protective coatings like paints and corrosion-

resistant materials shield surfaces from corrosive
elements.

02 Cathodic protection systems, such as

sacrificial anodes, mitigate corrosion by
diverting corrosive currents.

03 Regular maintenance and inspection regimes

identify and address corrosion early, preventing
extensive damage.

EXPERIMENTAL WORK

01 Extracting the corrosion inhibitors from the above 6 samples and converting it into
powder form.

02 Applying it over mild steel pieces and engulfing it in water and then removed it and
submerged it in corrosive medium.

03 After 2-3 months of resting underwater, it was removed and underwent

testing and analysis using four main techniques.
• Immersion test
• Characterization techniques
• Weight loss measurements
• Coating Hardness/ adhesion test
BEFORE EXTRACTION

SETUP

FINAL
DURING EXTRACTION
The coating process was done by using a brush and it was then dried in
an oven for about 24 hours at a temperature of 25 °C.
The prepared powder was then mixed with epoxy raisin and hardener in
very specific ratio of 1:2 to form a viscous mixture for an easier
application.
The coating specimens are kept in the corrosive medium for 14 days for
further analysis

RESULTS & CONCLUSION

01 The simplest way of measuring the corrosion rate of a metal is to immerse the sample
in the test medium ( water ) and measure the loss of weight of the material as a
function of time.
02 Four glass beakers of 250 ml capacity were labeled A to D, each containing water solution.

03 After 144 hours, the specimens were taken out and they were again
cleaned and weighed.

04 From the initial and final Thus the loss in this obtained and corrosion rate (CR) is found from the formula
given below.
CORROSION RATE (CR) = Weight loss x 534 /Density x Area x Time

Density of Mild Steel = 7.65 g/cm3

The Inhibition efficiency (IE) was calculated using = W0 -

W1/W0 x 100

W0 = Weight loss without inhibitor

W1 = Weight loss with inhibitor
