PROBLEM STATEMENT
The corrosion problem in the naval industry and the lack of
economical and organic solutions to it
01
Persistent corrosion undermines naval infrastructure integrity.
02
Corrosion compromises naval vessels' operational readiness.
Anupama, Ramya, and Joseph's study delves into the inhibitive interaction of
Anupama, Plectranthus amboinicus leaf extract with mild steel in hydrochloric acid through
K.K. et electrochemical measurements and theoretical calculations. Published in
2
al. Measurement in 2017, their research sheds light on the corrosion inhibition
capabilities of Plectranthus amboinicus leaf extract, offering valuable insights into the
protective properties of natural extracts against corrosion in acidic media.
This study by Zhu et al. focuses on the characterization of metal pitting corrosion using
scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) and binary image processing. Published in
Z Corrosion Science in 2020, the research demonstrates the application of SAM and
3 hu, Y. image analysis techniques to quantify and visualize the pitting corrosion on metal
et al. surfaces, providing valuable insights into the understanding and monitoring of this type
of localized corrosion.
CORROSION IN NAVAL INDUSTRY
02 Salt-laden air and moisture create conducive environments for corrosion on exposed metal
surfaces.
04 Microbial activity in marine environments accelerates corrosion through biofouling and microbial-induced
corrosion (MIC).

EXPERIMENTAL WORK
01 Extracting the corrosion inhibitors from the above 6 samples and converting it into
powder form.
02 Applying it over mild steel pieces and engulfing it in water and then removed it and
submerged it in corrosive medium.
SETUP
FINAL
DURING EXTRACTION
The coating process was done by using a brush and it was then dried in
an oven for about 24 hours at a temperature of 25 °C.
The prepared powder was then mixed with epoxy raisin and hardener in
very specific ratio of 1:2 to form a viscous mixture for an easier
application.
The coating specimens are kept in the corrosive medium for 14 days for
further analysis

RESULTS & CONCLUSION
01 The simplest way of measuring the corrosion rate of a metal is to immerse the sample
in the test medium ( water ) and measure the loss of weight of the material as a
function of time.
02 Four glass beakers of 250 ml capacity were labeled A to D, each containing water solution.
03 After 144 hours, the specimens were taken out and they were again
cleaned and weighed.
04 From the initial and final Thus the loss in this obtained and corrosion rate (CR) is found from the formula
given below.
CORROSION RATE (CR) = Weight loss x 534 /Density x Area x Time
