 It is a international sports competitions that are held
in every once in every four years.
 The Olympic games are held in a different country on
each occasion.
 They are divided in two categories.
 Summer Olympics and winter Olympics.
 Excellence(the quality of being very good,

 Friendship
 Respect
 The first value is striving (prayas karna)for
best, excellence and encouraging people to
the best they can be. The important thing
isn't winning. But taking part, making
progress and enjoying the healthy
combination of body, will and mind.
 Celebrating friendship is quite unique to the
Olympic games. It is an event that brings
people together after every four years. It
encouraging us to see sport as an instrument
for mutual understanding between
individuals & between people all over the
world.
 This includes respect for yourself, the rules
and regulations, your opponents, your body,
for other people, for sport and for the
environment.

 The ancient Olympic games began at Olympia in Athens
Greece in 776 BC.
 Days 5.
 The first games were held in the wooded valley Olympia in
Ellis.
 At that time, the Greeks erected statuses and built temples
dedicated to Zeus, considered supreme among gods.
 Later on Hercules the son of Zeus, started these games in
honor of his father.

 3. Foot chariot running, throwing
 4. Contact games( BOXING)
 5. Closing ceremony , Awards.
 The winners of these games were crowned with
wreaths from a sacred olive tree that grew behind
the temple of Zeus. Hercules, the founder of
these games planted this tree.
 The Olympics were considered as religious event
for the Greeks. The site Olympia was dedicated
to Zeus.
 The Olympics were held every four years from
776 BC to 393 AD. Later abolished in 394 AD by
Rome emperor Theodosius 1.
 Ancient Olympic games lasted for 1170 years.
 The gape period is known as Olympiad.
 The credit for the revival of Olympic games entirely
goes to Pierre Baron de Coubertin, the father of
modern Olympic games of France.
 In 1875, a group of German archaeologist began to
excavate the ruins of the stadium and temples of
Olympia. These remain were destroyed by earth quick
and buried by a landslide.
 This motivated baron to organize modern Olympic
meeting international conference in June 1894. but
the meeting wasn’t successful due to poor response.
 Baron again invited delegates from 9 countries U.S,
England, Sweden, Spain , Italy, Russia, Greece,
Belgium, France to discuss revival of Olympics
games.
 The first of the modern Olympic
games were opened on Sunday,
march 24, 1896, in Athens.

 This is based on a model designed by Baron
de Coubertin in 1914.
 It was first hoisted in 1920 at
Antwerp(Belgium) Olympics.
 It is made of white silk. In the centre of the
flag there five interlocked rings in the spirit
of friendship in different five colours that is
BLUE, YELLOW,BLACK,GREEN and RED.
 The rings are arranged in the shape of a
‘W’.
 The blue ring shall be high on the left
nearer the flag pole.
 The IOC was created on 23rd June
1894 in Paris(France) by Pierre
Baron De Coubertin.
 Headquarter : Lausanne,
Switzerland.
 First president : Demetrius
Vikelas.
 Current president : Thomas Bach.
 Mainly three categories: president
1, vice president 4 and executive
board 10 members.
 The first summer Olympic was
held in Athens on 6th April 1896
and winter Chamonix (France) in
1924.
 The place where the Olympics will be organized is
decided by the this committee. The right to decide
days on which the games will be held also rests with
this committee.
 For conducting the competition and general
programmers for the Olympics, fundamental rules
and regulations are set up by this committee.
 It also ensures the regular conduct of the Olympics
games.
 It encourages and supports the promotion of women
in sports at all levels.
 It leads the fight against doping in sports.
 It encourages the development of sports for all.
 Indian Olympic Association was established in 1927.
 Sir Dorabji Jamshedji Tata and Dr. Noehren became the founder
president and secretary general, respectively, of Indian Olympic
association.
 IOA is affiliated to the IOC.
 OBJECTIVES:
 Development and promotion of the Olympic movement.
 It enforcement of all rules and regulations of the IOC and IOA.
 Promotion and encouragement of physical, moral and cultural
education of the young people of the nation so that their
character can be developed.
