Four Stroke Petrol Engine; Working
Parts of Four-Stroke Engine
The parts of the four-stroke engine are:
Inlet valve and outlet valve: The input valve allows fresh air to enter and mix it with
fuel, and the output valve simultaneously removes the spent air-fuel combination from
the cylinder.
Spark plug: It sends electric current to the combustion chamber, igniting the air-fuel
mixture and quickly expanding the gas.
Cylinder Head: The top cover of the cylinder towards the top dead centre is called the
cylinder head.
Crankshaft: The crankshaft turns reciprocating motion into rotating motion.
Piston: The piston is used to transfer the expanding gas force to the mechanical
rotation of the crankshaft in an engine with the help of a connecting rod.
Crankcase: The crank is housed in the crankcase. It is used as a sump of lubricating
oil.
Connecting rod: It acts as a lever arm that sends motion from the piston to the
crankshaft.
Cylinder: The piston reciprocates in the cylinder. It is also called the heart of the
engine.
Flywheel: Flywheel is a mechanical device that stores energy produced from motion.

TYPES OF ENGINE

1. External combustion engine:- The combustion of fuel takes

place outside the engine. e.g. Steam engine, Sterling engine.
2. Internal combustion engine:- The combustion of fuel takes
place inside the engine cylinder. e.g. Gasoline engine, Diesel
engine.
