WATER QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF

THE GODAVARI RIVER AROUND

PEDDAPALLI DISTRICT,
TELANGANA

Prepared By: Under the supervision of:

Boda Devendar Naik PROF. V. R. DESAI
Objective

The project related to the assessment of water quality parameters of River Godavari was
carried out to evaluate the various water quality parameters and to calculate Water Quality
Index(WQI).

WQI can be a successful tool to transform complex water quality data into information
that is easily understandable and useable by the general public and decision-makers.

Based on the results, the existing conservation measures have been reviewed and
additional measures are suggested.

Study Area
Sampling Locations
S1: Outlet of ash pond effluents NTPC
S2: Near FCI intake well for domestic discharge
S3: Godavarikhani bathing ghat
S4: Ramagundam upstream near dam
S5: Ramagundam at Manthani exit from the city.
Methodology
The study covers about 30 km of the river
starting from the Outlet of ash pond effluents
of M/s. NTPC, Ramagundam to River
Godavari d/s of Ramagundam at Manthani.

Five locations were selected for the collection

Data Acquisition of water samples from the river during the year
January 2021-December 2021.

The water quality data of the above five

locations were collected from the Telangana
State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) from
January 2021 to December 2021.
The Water Quality Index was calculated each and
every month for assessing the quality of water.

It was done by considering eight important

physicochemical properties using the Central Public
Health Environmental Engineering Organisation
WQI Calculation (CPHEEO), 1991 & Indian Council of Medical
Research (ICMR), 1975 standards.

In order to calculate WQI eight important parameters,

are pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Dissolved
Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total
Alkalinity (Alk), Total hardness (Har-T), Calcium
(Ca), and Magnesium (Mg) was used.
Results and Discussions
Monthly Variation of
different parameters
across Five sampling
locations.
Monthly Variation of
different parameters
across Five sampling
locations.
The water quality at location S1 was bad
(25-50) throughout the year while the
water quality at other four locations was
good (70-90) throughout the year.

Thereby indicating that the wastewater

coming from the NTPC ash pond to the
Godavari river is the major source of
pollution in Ramagundam.
Conclusion
The water quality assessment of a 30 km stretch of Godavari River in Peddapalli
District from Outlet of Ash Pond of NTPC to Manthani in Telangana State indicates
that the river is heavily polluted at the station S1: Outlet of ash pond of NTPC to
river the Godavari and other four stations has less pollution according to the Water
Quality Index (WQI), computed from January 2021 to December 2021, from the data
collected from CPCB and TSPCB.

Physico-chemical and biological analysis indicated that Godavari river water does not
meet the norms to be potable water, confirming the long-range impact of pollution on
health and the ecosystem.

Therefore, river water should be subjected to suitable chemical and biological

treatment before it can be used for drinking purposes especially the water coming
from NTPC ash pond should be treated before being released into the river.
