Time: 10 min Rational Equations I Do
Rational Equations are equations containing one or more termes in fractional form
Examples : of Rational Equations

Rational Equations I Do
To solve Rational Equation :
step 1 we need to determine the excluded values (the values that make any of the
denominator equal zero so it can’t be solutions of the equation)

Step 2 Factor all of the denominators and find the (LCD)

Step 3 Multiply each side of the equation by the least common denominator (LCD)

Step 4 Solve the resulting equation

Step 5 Check your solutions in the original equation

(you must exclude the values we found in the first step)
Example1 : solve =
Example1 : solve =

step1 t ≠ 0
Example1 : solve =

step1 t ≠ 0

step2 denominators 3,6 and t the LCD = 6t

Example1 : solve =
step1 t ≠ 0

step2 denominators 3,6 and t the LCD = 6t

step3 (6t) = (6t)

(6t) = (6t) ( simplify)

(2t) = (6)
4t – 5t = 6
Example1 : solve =
step1 t ≠ 0

step2 denominators 3,6 and t the LCD = 6t

step3 (6t) = (6t)

(6t) = (6t) ( simplify)

(2t) = (6)
4t – 5t = 6
step4 -t = 6 t=-6
Example1 : solve =
step1 t ≠ 0

step2 denominators 3,6 and t the LCD = 6t

step3 (6t) = (6t)

(6t) = (6t) ( simplify)

(2t) = (6)
4t – 5t = 6
step4 -t = 6 t=-6

step5 = = and =
Example2 : solve =
Example2 : solve =

step1 x – 6 =0 (x = 6) and x + 2 = 0 ( x = -2 )
Example2 : solve =

step1 x – 6 =0 (x = 6) and x + 2 = 0 ( x = -2 )

step2 denominators x-6 and x+2 the LCD = ( x – 6)( x +2)

Example2 : solve =

step1 x – 6 =0 (x = 6) and x + 2 = 0 ( x = -2 )

step2 denominators x-6 and x+2 the LCD = ( x – 6)( x +2)

step3 ( x – 6)( x +2) = ( x – 6)( x +2) ( x – 6)( x +2) = ( x – 6)( x +2)

(x + 2)( x + 2) = ( x + 2)( x – 1)
+ 2x + 2x + 4 = - x + 2x – 2 + 4x + 4 = + x - 2
Example2 : solve =

step1 x – 6 =0 (x = 6) and x + 2 = 0 ( x = -2 )

step2 denominators x-6 and x+2 the LCD = ( x – 6)( x +2)

step3 ( x – 6)( x +2) = ( x – 6)( x +2) ( x – 6)( x +2) = ( x – 6)( x +2)

(x + 2)( x + 2) = ( x – 6 )( x – 1)
+ 2x + 2x + 4 = - x - 6x + 6 + 4x + 4 = -7 x + 6

step4 + 4x - +7x = - 4 + 6 +11x = +2 = x=

Example2 : solve =

step1 x – 6 =0 (x = 6) and x + 2 = 0 ( x = -2 )

step2 denominators x-6 and x+2 the LCD = ( x – 6)( x +2)

step3 ( x – 6)( x +2) = ( x – 6)( x +2) ( x – 6)( x +2) = ( x – 6)( x +2)

(x + 2)( x + 2) = ( x – 6 )( x – 1)
+ 2x + 2x + 4 = - x - 6x + 6 + 4x + 4 = -7 x + 6

step4 + 4x - +7x = - 4 + 6 +11x = +2 = x=
