ARNIS

1
The term ARNIS is believed to be a Tagalog
corruption of the Spanish term ARNES, or
harness, a reference to the decorations
worn by the early Filipinos. Different
provinces may have different names of
Arnis, such as baston and kaliradaman
(Ilonggo, Bisaya), pagkalikali (Ibanag), and
Kalirongan (Pangasinan)
2
During the Spanish occupation of the
Philippines, the native warriors used arnis,
along with spears and bolos, in their heroic
battles for freedom and liberty. Pigafetta,
Magellan’s chronicler and historian, recorded
that many of the native warriors carried
short, pointed hardwood sticks which had
been further hardened by fire and used in
fighting.
3
When the Spanish imposed a ban on the
practice of all native fighting arts and the
carrying of bladed weapons, the Filipinos
were forced to substitute the sword with
rattan in slashing and thrusting.

4
Hardly ever was it used to block an upcoming
strike. Once the Filipinos began to appreciate the
combat effectiveness of the stick, the use of the
knife also changed. This is turn led to the creation
of olisi y baraw (stick and dagger), somewhat
similar to the Spanish fighting weapon espada y
daga (sword and knife). Some of the equipment
used together with arnis include knives, sticks or
weapons with blades
