Synchronous Generator

Can be constructed in 2 ways:

• Rotating armature and stationary field (5 kVA and less).
• Stationary armature and rotating field (large machines).
Synchronous Generator

Rotating armature Stationary armature

• DC field on the stator. • DC field is produced by the rotor.

• 3 phase AC voltage induced on the • 3 phase AC voltage is induced on
rotor. the stator.
• Connected to loads through slip • Generator is connected directly to
rings and brushes. loads.
Advantages of stationary
armature
• Load current goes directly to load
(no slip rings and brushes are
needed).
• Stationary windings are easier to
insulate.
• Rating of the generator can be
increased.
Capacitor phase angle
• At 0V, capacitor has no charge and
acts like a short circuit.
• As the capacitor charges, current
flow decreases.
• When the capacitor voltage is
equal to source voltage, there is no
current flow.
Inductor phase angle
• When current is first flows to the
inductor, magnetic field opposes
current.
• Current increases at a slow rate and
voltage across the inductor decreases.
• At maximum current, inductor acts
like a short circuit.
