WHY DO BIRDS

MIGRATE?
• Bird migration is the regular seasonal
journey undertaken by many species of
birds.
• Bird movements include those made
in response to changes in food
availability, habitat or weather.
• Approximately 1800 of the world's 10,000
bird species are long-distance migrants.
ARCTIC
TERN
• The Arctic Tern is a sea bird.
• The species is strongly i ator , seeing
two summers each year as it migrates from
the north along a winding route to the
oceans around Antarctica and back, a round
trip of about 70,900 km each year.
• This is by far the longest regular migration
by
any known animal.

GODWIT
• The Bar-tailed Godwit is a large wader,
from the Arctic coasts
and Tundra and winters on coasts in
temperate and tropical regions.
• It makes the longest known non-stop flight
of any bird without pausing to feed by any
animal, 11,680 km along a route from Alaska
to New Zealand.
MIGRATORY BIRDS IN INDIA
• India plays host to a number of
migratory birds in summers as well as in
winters.
• It is estimated that over hundred species
of migratory birds come to India in search
of feeding grounds or to escape the severe
winter of their native habitat.
• The numerous wildlife sanctuaries set up in
the country serve as their temporary
habitat.

• Comb Duck are large
sized ducks.
• They are mainly found
in the Northern parts of
India especially in the
state of Haryana. It can
also be spotted in the
Sultanpur, Manas and
Corbett national parks.
WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY
• World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) was
initiated in 2006 and is a global awareness-
raising campaign highlighting the need for
the protection of migratory birds and their
habitats. On the second weekend each May,
people around the world take action and
organise public events such as bird festivals,
education programmes and bird watching
excursions to celebrate World Migratory Bird
Day and to help raise awareness.
