LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Introduction
• Definition
• Etio-Pathogenesis
• Diagnosis
• Types of thyroid carcinoma
INTRODUCTION

• Carcinomas of thyroid are Relatively Uncommon

• SEX : FEMALES are more affected than males
• The rate of newly diagnosed cancer has been rising dramatically
• Mortality rate is lowest among solid tumors
DEFINITION
• CARCINOMA : Malignant tumors of epithelial origin

• THYROID CARCINOMA :

• Tumors arising from Follicular epithelial cells

1. Papillary Carcinoma
2. Follicular Carcinoma
3. Anaplastic Carcinoma

• Tumors arising from Parafollicular or C cells

1. Medullary Carcinoma
ETIO-PATHOGENESIS

• External Radiation : Major risk factor

• Excess Iodine and TSH : Associated with Follicular type
• Genetic Basis
DIAGNOSIS

1. Neck palpation
2. Ultrasonography (USG)
(Gold Standard Method)
TYPES
• THYROID CARCINOMA - 4 TYPES

1. Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

2. Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma
3. Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma
4. Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma
(Undifferentiated or poorly differentiated carcinoma)
TYPES (Contd.)
• Papillary Carcinoma :
1. Most common type (75-85%)
2. Common in all age groups
3. Prognosis of papillary carcinoma is Good

• Follicular Carcinoma :
1. Other common type next to Papillary Carcinoma (10-20%)
2. Common in middle and old age
3. Prognosis is between Papillary and anaplastic Carcinoma
TYPES (Contd.)
• Medullary Carcinoma :
1. About 5% of thyroid carcinoma
2. Equally common in both men and women
3. Prognosis is better

• Anaplastic Carcinoma :
1. Less than 5% of thyroid carcinoma
2. Predominantly found in old age
3. Prognosis is bad
