Electronic Media
• Electronic media are media that

• The primary electronic media sources
familiar to the general public
are video recordings, audio
recordings, multimedia presentations, slide
presentations, CD-
ROM and online content.

Television?
• Television (TV) is a telecommunication medium for
transmitting and receiving moving images that can be
monochrome (black-and-white) or colored, with or
without accompanying sound. "Television" may also refer
specifically to a television set, television programming, or
television transmission.
• The etymology of the word has a mixed Latin and Greek
origin, meaning "far sight": Greek tele (τῆλε), far, and
Latin visio, sight (from video, vis- to see, or to view in the
first person).
• Television is a mass medium,
for entertainment, education, news,
and advertising.
• In 2013, 79% of the
world's households owned a
television set.
An Introduction to Television
• By the late 1930s, radio was woven into the fabric of
American life. It allowed millions to enjoy public
events in the comfort of their own home.

• Adding picture was the next logical step.

• By the 1950’s, television had already become the


main medium for shaping public opinion.
The Birth of Television

Although the electronic television was demonstrated to the


public by Philo Farnsworth in 1928 ,“technical difficulties,
corporate competition, and World War II postponed its
widespread introduction to the public until 1946”.
Post War Growth
• In 1945 the the first experimental microwave relay
system was introduced by Western Union
between New York and Philadelphia. This
distribution system transmitted communication
signals via radio along a series of towers.
• Between 1945 and 1948, the number of
commercial television stations grow from 9 to 48
and the number of cities having commercial
service went from 8 to 23.

Jenkins used the disk idea to invent the first
ever practical mechanical television system.

Baird, was the first person to have succeeded
in transmitting moving pictures through the

IN PAKISTAN, TELEVISION WAS FIRST TIME INTRODUCED IN THE
EXHIBITION NEAR MAZARAY QUAID ON 16 SEPTEMBER 1955; JUST FOR
ENTERTAINMENT THERE WAS A SHORT CIRCUIT TELEVISION FOR
Audiences TO WATCH THE MIRCLE INVENTION. THIS EVENT WAS
ARRANGED BY AMERICAN Consulate IN KARACHI.

The idea of establishing the television industry in Pakistan was conceived by the
National Education Commission with the support of President Ayub Khan.

On 26 November 1964, first news were broadcasted which beamed black and
white transmission by the PTV from Lahore.

PTV was brought under the complete control of the state in 1971, under the
Nationalization Program

A major breakthrough was achieved in 1973 when all the TV stations in the
country were linked by a microwave network, enabling live telecast of
different programs which helped the PTV save time and money , Centers
were opened in Peshawar and Quetta in 1974.

Another reason to do away with the black and white broadcast was that in most
part of the world the TV transmission was getting colored and companies were
now not making parts for the equipment used in the B/W transmission. The day
came soon when in 1976 COLOUR TRANSMISSION STARTED on
experimental basis. Regular Color transmission started from Feb 18, 1982

Pakistan Television Academy was founded in 1987 to train the students who
wished to be in this field.

During the decades of 1970′s, 80′s and 90′s PTV teleplays were the best
considered programs of the subcontinent and were known all around the world.

Private TV Channels Emerged in Pakistan:


Surprisingly, the free electronic media in Pakistan was initiated by a
dictator General Musharraf. in March 2002, he decided to set up Pakistan
Electronic Media Regulator Authority (PEMRA) with a view to facilitate,
license and regulate the growth of electronic media in the private sector.

Role of PEMRA:
The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) was
formed to "facilitate and promote a free, fair and independent electronic
media", including opening the broadcasting market in Pakistan. Basically it
allows all cable operators to broadcast channels according PEMRA
permission
Channels of Pakistan:
1) ARY group of channels :
Launched: September 14, 2001, Founder: Abdul Razzak
Yaqoob,Network :ARY Digital, Owned by: ARY Group, Sister channel(s): ARY
News, ARY Musik, ARY Qtv, ARY Zauq.

2) GEO channels :

Launched: 1 October 2002, Owned by: Independent Media Corporation, Slogan:Har


pal Haseen Hai, Har Pal GEO OR Sirf Geo Par, Headquarters: Karachi, Sister
channel(s): GEO News, GEO Tez, GEO Super, GEO Kahani.

3) HUM network:

Launched: January 17, 2005, Owned by: Hum Network Limited, Slogan: Pure
Entertainment, Headquarters: Karachi,other channel(s): Masala TV, Style 360. Hum
Network Limited was known as Eye Television Network Limited prior to January 21,
2011. Hum Network announced its first Hum Awards ceremony will be held in March
2013.

• Satellite television delivers television
programs using signals relayed
from space radio stations. The signals are
received via an outdoor parabolic reflector
antenna usually referred to as a satellite
dish , A satellite receiver then decodes the
desired television programme for viewing
on a television set

television)is the digital distribution
of television content, such as TV shows. It
is also sometimes called web television,
