CREATING PRESENTATION
CONTENT : PLANNING
The process of developing content for presentations follow is similar
to the process of writing. It commences with planning presentation
content which entails:
1.Identify your topic 2. Determine your purpose
3.Analyze your audience 4. Craft a title
5. Research, study and organize relevant information and materials
6.State your message 7. Outline your key points
8. Anchor your core message and key points
DRAFTING PRESENTATION
CONTENT
Drafting a presentation involves the structuring of presentation into the
following parts:
Introduction. Create a strong opening
Body. Develop the key points
Conclusion. Creates a closing that throws a powerful call to action
Format your content
REVISING, EDITING AND
PROOFREADING CONTENT
After drafting, the content must be subjected to revision, editing, and
proofreading for improvement. Issues addressed include:
Contents. Adequate coverage of the topic. Meeting the expectations of the audience.
Achieving the purpose of communication
Adhering to the principles of effective communication i.e. clarity, correctness,
completeness, coherence, etc.
Editing. Checking for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and typing errors.
Revision of the entire presentation as many times as is necessary.
ENHANCING PRESENTATIONS WITH
VISUAL TOOLS: POWERPOINT
SLIDE ORDER
Content is more appealing when it includes visual stimulation. One of the most
popular and effective tools you can use is PowerPoint. To do this, you should
consider the features, design, and ordering of the slides.
1. Your first slide should contain the title of the presentation, event, date, presenter’s name
and position.
2. Your second slide should have your core message in the statement or question form.
3. Your third slide should set out the key points of your presentation.
4. Your fourth slide onwards should present the details of each key point, with a new key point on a new slide. The total
number of slides for your key points will depend on the number of key points, the number of details on each key point,
and the total amount of time you have for the presentation.
5. Your last but one slide should capture the closing of your presentation
6. The last slide should set out all appropriate contact details (official address, email address, website, blog, etc.)
Note. avoid too many slides as this will simply overwhelm the audience.
ENHANCING PRESENTATIONS WITH
VISUAL TOOLS: POWERPOINT SLIDE
FEATURE AND DESIGN
1. Select an appropriate design
2. Each subsequent slide (after the first slide) should have a clear heading
– a phrase or a question.
3. Avoid crowded scanty, unintelligible slides. Use bullet points that consist of intelligent phrases
rather than single words.
4. Use alignment, capitalization, and punctuation effectively. Also avoid confusing abbreviations,
italics, and underlining.
5. Limit the amount of text per slide. Use appropriate graphics, pictures, and illustrations to
complement text and aid understanding
6. Use a limited number of easy-to-read font types and sizes that convey the desired presentation
tone.
7. Number each slide and put the logo of the organization you are representing on each slide.
USING PRESENTATION
VISUALS EFFECTIVELY
To effectively use PowerPoint presentation.
1. Project visuals such as video images, maps, posters, charts,
2. and slides. Refer to the visual and let the audience know how it fits into the
presentation. Paraphrase rather than read the visual line for line.
3. Place a computer screen on a desk in front of you showing the presentation to
allow you to maintain synchrony with what is being viewed on the screen by
your audience.
3. Use print copies of your slides to guide you, where a computer is not available.
STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE
PRESENTATION DELIVERY:
PREPARATION
Preparing for a presentation requires much more than
creating great content.
1. Practice, get feedback, and improve.
2. Prepare yourself physically – inside and out. Pick out appropriate clothing for
the presentation. Eat well because you need to be physically sound and energetic.
Take time out to rest for at least one day for the presentation.
3. 3. Ensure that all your materials are intact, double-checked, and certified okay.
Email content to the organizer in advance and insist that they load it onto a
laptop, check it through to be sure everything is fine, and confirm with you.
STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE
PRESENTATION DELIVERY:
ACTUAL DELIVERY
There are verbal and non-verbal strategies that can make an actual presentation
engaging and exciting. Application of these strategies will depend on
the appropriateness of the subject matter, audience, purpose, and the setting of the presentation –
whether physical or virtual.
1. Make a grand entrance by using an opening that gives your presentation a brilliant start and
cap up your presentation with a closing that gives an excellent finish.
2. Connect and build rapport with your audience.
3. Use questions. Ask open-ended questions that allow your audience to think and respond with
interest and pause after asking a question to give the audience time to reflect on the question.
4. Engage your audience.
5. Speak with grace.
STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE
PRESENTATION DELIVERY:
ACTUAL DELIVERY
6. Spice things up with your expressions.
7. Use expressions that are socio-culturally appropriate.
8. Use expressions to promote understanding.
9. Keep the flow.
10. Use facial expressions to brighten your presentation.
11. Use body movements that strengthen your presentation.
12. Always be in control.
