 What is a METER?

While the beats are moving,

they are grouped in twos, threes, or
fours called METER. The Word
“meter” came from the Greek Word
“metron” which means “to
measure”.

 What is TIME SIGNATURE?

The time signature is a

fraction-like number that tells
you the amount and types of
notes contained in a
measure.The number above
tells you the number of beats in
a measure. The number below
tells you what note receives

TIME SIGNATURE
 In 2/4 time signature, each measure
will have two equal beats and a
quarter note receives one (1) beat.

In 3/4 time signature, each measure

will have three equal beats and a
quarter note receives one (1) beat.

In 4/4 time signature, each measure

will have four equal beats and a
quarter note receives one (1) beat.

downward on the first beat, then up on the
second.

In 3/4 time signature, the loud or strong beat

is on the first note. This beat is the
downward movement. At count 2, the
movement is outward, and on the third beat,
upward.
In 4/4 time signature, the strong beat is on
beat 1. It is a downward movement. On the
second beat, the movement is inward. On

 What is an OSTINATO?

A repeating rhythm or melody

pattern may be added to a song.
This is called OSTINATO.
An ostinato is a rhythmic or
melodic pattern that repeats.
