STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A study to assess the effectiveness of Betal nut soaked water on type 2

diabetic patients in Chennai
INTRODUCTION
Diabetes mellitus presents a significant global health challenge, characterized by
chronic hyperglycemia and associated with a myriad of complications. Despite
advancements in conventional treatments, interest persists in exploring
complementary and alternative therapies to improve glycemic control and reduce
complications. Betel nut (Areca catechu), traditionally used in various cultures, has
garnered attention for its potential health benefits, including its purported ability to
influence glucose metabolism. One traditional practice involves soaking betel nut in
water to create a preparation believed to possess therapeutic properties. However,
rigorous scientific investigation of betel nut soaked water’s efficacy and safety in
diabetes management is scarce. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the
impact of betel nut soaked water on key glycemic parameters and patient
perceptions, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of its potential role as
an adjunctive therapy for diabetes mellitus.
NEED OF THE STUDY
This study is prompted by the persistent global challenge of diabetes mellitus,
which continues to grow in prevalence and poses difficulties in achieving
optimal glycemic control and preventing associated complications. Despite
available pharmaceutical treatments, many patients turn to complementary
therapies to supplement their management strategies and enhance their overall
well-being. Betel nut soaked water, a traditional remedy known for potential
hypoglycemic effects, presents a promising yet insufficiently explored option.
Rigorous scientific investigation is crucial to validate its effectiveness, safety,
and practicality as an additional treatment for diabetes mellitus. By addressing
these gaps in knowledge, this study aims to provide evidence-based insights
that could guide clinical practice and benefit patients seeking alternative
approaches to managing their diabetes more effectively.
AIM OF THE STUDY

To assess the effectiveness of Betal nut soaked water on type 2 diabetic

patients in Chennai
OBJECTIVES
1. To measure the baseline blood glucose levels of diabetic patients before
administering betel nut soaked water.
2. To administer betel nut soaked water to diabetic patients over a specified period.
3. To measure the blood glucose levels of diabetic patients after the administration
period.
4. To compare the pre- and post-intervention blood glucose levels to determine the
effectiveness of betel nut soaked water.
5. To assess any side effects or adverse reactions experienced by patients during the
intervention period.
6. To analyze the correlation between the duration of betel nut soaked water intake
and changes in blood glucose levels.
HYPOTHESIS

H0: Betel nut soaked water has no significant effect on blood glucose
levels among diabetic patients.
VARIABLES

Independent Variable: Consumption of betel nut soaked water.

Dependent Variable: Blood glucose levels of diabetic patients.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

Descriptive statistics will be used to identify mean and standard

deviations.

Paired t-test will be used to compare pre and post intervention blood
glucose level within each group.
DATA COLLECTION METHOD
• After obtaining ethical clearance from institutional ethical committee
of Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, the study will
be conducted.
• The investigator will recruit 60 samples based on the inclusion criteria
by using purposive sampling technique, 30 in the experimental group
and 30 in the control group.
• The purpose of the study will be explained by the investigator to each
of the study participant and a written informed consent will be
obtained.
INTERVENTION
• Approximately 2 to 3 samples will be selected everyday.
• Betal nut soaked water will be given on a daily basis.
• Meanwhile, the doubt regarding the study will be clarified.
• On the 7th day the patient will be evaluated in the both experimental
and control group.
