PAPERCRETE

History on papercrete block:-

An enormous amount of paper goes un-recycled each year in the united states (about 55%or 48million
tons),evently making it to landfills .industrial papers contain toxins such as inks, dyes, bleaches and
adhesieves which contaminate the surrounding soil and water. By using a mix of paper (50-80%) Portland
cement ,the paper fibres and thee chemicals are encased and the surrounding environment is prevented
from contamination. Fibrous mixes also leave tiny air pockets in the hardened material as from
contamination.Fibrous mix it more lightweight and better insulator.
Papercrete is essential a type of industrial strength paper mache made with paper with
paper and cardboard ,sand and Portland cement .Papercrete offers a way to turn trash paper and cardboard
in to expensieve houses that are strong well – unsatuated and easily built. Papercrete can simultaneously
reduce overuse of landfills while providing affordable housing for millons of people .This is an elegant
win-win solution to these two problems .SO in the united states papercrete has been innovated.
Introduction to Paper-Crete:

 Itis made with re-pulped paper-fiber with a combination of

Portland cement and or clay.

 This type of material is considered environmental friendly material.

 Paper-Creteis essentially a type of industrial strength paper Mache

made with paper cardboard, sand and Portland cement.

 This was discovered by ERIC PATTERSON and MIKE MC.CAIN in

the year 1928
Properties of Paper-Crete:

 Raw materials are very inexpensive and freely available.

 Compressive strength of 0.99-1.12 mpa.
 It has excellent heat and sound insulating properties.
 Paper-Crete is light weight and can be used to make
inexpensive roofing alternatives.
 Paper-Crete is very workable and can be formed into
different shapes such as blocks, panels and sheets with ease.
 It does not catch fire easily but smolders for hours.
PAPER-CRETE RATIO :-
USE % OF PAPER % OF PORTLAND % OF
CEMENT SAND
use
Good general use 80% 20% 0%
Good for shaping of 80% 10% 10%
sculpture
Outdoors retaining walls, 60% 20% 20%
Stem walls, etc
Can replace sand mix 80% 10% 10%

For one cubic yard mix:-

1) 2cubic foot of Portland cement.
2)12 cubic feet of plaster sand.
3)125 pounds of short aspect paper fibre(newspaper).
Manufacturing process:
Soak the waste paper in to the water for atleast 5h before
starting the work

Soaked paper is made pulp by x type drilling machine.

Weigh the cement sand and paper according to the

proportion.

Mixing has to be done in the machine for atleat 3-4

Revolution.

Pour the mix in to the iron mould of 14x9(inches)

Vibrate the mix to remove air .

Dry atleast for 7days after vibrating the mix.

Remove the forms after drying for 2weeks

Methodology Adopting:-

1)Literature review.
2)Casting of cubes with different material and
with different ratio.
3)Curing of cubes. {air dry curing}
4)Testing of the compressive strength.
5)Permeability test.
5)Flame test.
6)Conclusion.
USES:-

 Paper-Crete is suitable for making low cost homes .

 It is also suitable for making community rooms, sale
booths, storage rooms and sitting chairs in park, statues
in park Paper-Crete can also be used as a plaster.
 It can be sprayed on walls to give them good sound
and heat insulating properties.
CONCLUSION:-

 From the above results we conclude that density of the paper-crete is less than the
ordinary bricks density.
 Thus we can use the paper-crete for inner wall construction in place of bricks which
has high density, thereby they increase the dead weight of the structure which is
reduced by using paper-crete.
 After the tests conducted the compressive strength of the oven dried cubes is greater
than air dried cubes, but cube’s fail in shear only.
 They are cost is less other than solid blocks
