TRADITIONAL

POLITICS
(HANNA & ROBINSON)
Meiron Rajbhandari
INTRODUCTION

• Mark G. Hanna & Buddy Robinson (1994) identified three basic models
or approaches of “Community Empowerment.”

Hanna & Robinson

Direct Action
Traditional Social Transformative
Politics change Social Change
• Also known as Traditional Social Change Model, a plan for
making society better.
• It is called traditional because the authors believe it signifies
the status quo (existing state).
• Relies on elections and political parties to bring positive
change.
• The formal political system, with its parties and elections, is
really important in this approach.
TRADITIONAL
POLITICS
• a style of governance characterized by the involvement of a political elite,
often disconnected from the general population, making decisions and shaping policies
in a non-participative manner.
• a top-down, elite-driven approach
• non-participative efforts *
• lack of direct participation from a diverse range of citizens
• General public has limited involvement in the political process
• rational problem-solving*
• bending the status quo just enough to preserve it*

TRADITIONAL POLITICS SOCIAL PLANNING

PROBLEM-SOLVING
ORIENTATION
Both traditional politics and Rothman's model involve a
problem-solving orientation. In traditional politics, this might
manifest as policy development to address specific issues. In
Rothman's model, social planning includes the identification
of community problems and the formulation of plans and
strategies to address those problems through community
engagement and collaboration.

CONCLUSION

The Traditional Social Change Model, also known as the Traditionalist

Approach, relies on established political systems, emphasizing the status quo.
It places a significant reliance on elections and political parties for positive
change, characterized by a top-down, non-participative governance structure
led by a political elite.

In summary, this model cautiously seeks societal improvement within the

confines of the current system, favoring a controlled approach over radical
change.
