READING

FOR YOU… WHAT IS

READING?

READING IS _______________?
ICE BREAKER
READING
Reading is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in
order to construct or derive meaning (reading comprehension).
Reading is a means of language acquisition, communication, and
of sharing information and ideas.
Like all languages, it is a complex interaction between the text and
the reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge,
experiences, attitude, and language community which is culturally
and socially situated.

Bacon remarks in his essay “of studies” reading make the full man”
- Meaning for him, reading is most useful and important skill. It is more important
than speaking and writing. Reading is a source of joy.

According to “Menon and Patel” Reading habits, “good reading habits which keep
a student reading regularly for both pleasure and profit are the most valuable single
stimulant for growth that the school has impart”.
FULL QUOTE FROM BACON
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE
IMPORTANCE OF READING?
Reading means to understand the meaning of printed words that is, written
symbols.

WHY DO WE NEED TO READ?
Reading is needed to learn a language.
Where there is little reading, there is little language learning.
We need the reading ability to study text books, literature (novels, plays, poetry)
dictionaries etc.
In everyday life, we have to read notices, forms, bills, direction, bus and train time
table, place names and street signs.

WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT
THIS PICTURE
BASED ON THE PICTURE WHAT IS
INVOLVED IN READING?
SEVEN HABITS OF GOOD
READERS AND WRITERS
Good readers and good writers learn habits that help them become
strong and fluent. The seven habits are:

visualizing,
activating schema,
questioning,
inferring,
determining importance,
monitoring for meaning and
synthesizing.
VISUALIZING

Visualizing allows the student to form

mental pictures about what they are
reading to aid their comprehension of
a text.

By visualizing the characters, settings

or events, students will be able to
make connections.
ACTIVATING SCHEMA

Activating schema allows students to

make connections with previous
experiences to better comprehend the
text.
Students can make text-to-text, text-
to-self, or text-to-world connections.
Making connections allows students
to understand and remember what
was read.
QUESTIONING
Questioning gives students a purpose for
reading and writing. Students may ask
questions before, during or after reading
and writing.
There are several different types of
questions that students can ask: “right
there” questions, “in my mind”
questions, “on my own” questions and
“author and me” questions.
Initial questioning pushes students
towards asking deeper questions or
determining answers.
INFERRING

Inferring is what a student does to

comprehend what is not exactly
written in the text.
Students draw conclusions by using
prior knowledge combined with what
they have already read in the text.
DETERMINING
IMPORTANCE
Determining importance is when
students decide which information is
the most valuable to the text.
As students determine importance,
they will be able to remember details
about the text and/or activate schema
to understand the major points being
offered by the author.
MONITORING FOR
MEANING
Monitoring for meaning is when
students regularly stop and review
what was read in order to check for
understanding.
Students are not reading for speed or
to read an entire text; rather, they are
reading to comprehend the text.
SYNTHESIZING

Synthesizing is when students take

information from different places in
the text and make new meaning out of
it.
Students that synthesize are able to
convey the author’s message and
support their thinking with evidence
from the text.
BENEFITS OF EFFECTIVE
READING
Effective reading can provide you with a ‘comprehensible input’ from the book or
document that you read.
It can enhance your general ability to use other language skills such as listening,
speaking, and writing.
It can enhance your vocabulary, that is, you can always learn new words, phrases, and
expressions.
Effective reading also helps you keep your mind focused on the material and prevents it
from unnecessary distractions.
Moreover, this enables you to extract useful information much more efficiently within a
limited time.
It can help you consolidate both previously learned language and knowledge
SPEED IN READING
Average reading speed of a college
students is 150 – 250 words per minute.
GOOD reading speed is around 250 -
400 words.
Exceptional cases can extend up to 1000
words per minute.
However speed of reading varies with
the purpose of reading.
