 Sum of observations= Average*Number of observations

 Number of observations= Sum of observations/Average

 If the value of each item is increase by the same value a, then the
average of the group or items will also increase by a.

 If the value of each item is decreased by the same value a, then the
average of the group of items will also decrease by a.

 If the value of each item is multiplied by the same value a, then the
average of the group or items will also get multiplied by a.

 If the value of each item is divided by the same value a, then the
average of the group or items will also get divided by a.
 If we know only the average of the two groups individually, we
cannot find out the average of the combined group of items.

 Average of n natural no's=(n+1)/2

 Average of even No'=(n+1)

 Average of odd No'= n

 General Formula=(1st number +Last number)/2

CONCEPTS:
 If the number of quantities in two groups are n1 and
n2 respectively and their individual average is X and Y
respectively, the combined average of the two groups is given by;
(n1X+n2Y)/n1+n2

 If the average of n1 quantities is X and the average of n2 quantities

out of n1 quantities is Y, the average of the remaining quantities is
given by;
(n1X-n2Y)/n1-n2
 If a person travels a distance at a speed of x km/hr and the same
distance at a speed of y km/hr then the average speed during the
whole journey is given by-

 If a person covers A km at x km/hr and B km at y km/hr and C km at

z km/hr, then the average speed in covering the whole distance is-
 When a person leaves the group and another person joins the
group in place of that person then-

 If the average age is increased,

Age of new person = Age of separated person + (Increase in
average × total number of persons)

 If the average age is decreased,

Age of new person = Age of separated person - (Decrease in
average × total number of persons)

DEPARTMENT OF CAREER DEVELOPMENT

 When a person joins the group-In case of increase in average

• Age of new member = Previous average + (Increase in average

× Number of members including new member)

 In case of decrease in average

• Age of new member = Previous average - (Decrease in average

× Number of members including new member)
