TROPICAL

STORM
Maria Camila Lora Cárdenas

English class 6g.

INTRODUCTION Tropical storms are meteorological phenomena
characterized by strong winds, heavy rainfall, and a
closed atmospheric circulation. They form over warm
and humid oceans, usually near the equator.
I. Formation of Tropical Storms:
1. Favorable conditions:
1. Warm water (at least 26.5°C) is required to provide the
necessary energy.
2. The atmosphere must be unstable enough to allow
convection.
2. Life cycle:
1. Begins as a tropical disturbance.
2. Develops into a tropical depression.
3. Becomes a tropical storm when winds reach 63 km/h.
4. Can intensify into a hurricane if winds exceed 119
km/h.
II. Structure of Tropical Storms:

1. Eye and eyewall:

1. The eye is the storm's center, characterized by calm
conditions.
2. The eyewall surrounds the eye and has the most severe
weather conditions.

2. Rain bands:
3. Are cloudy bands rotating around the storm's center.
4. Produce heavy rain and strong winds.
III. Intensity Classification:

1. Classification system: We use the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale to measure intensity.

- Categories 1 to 5, with Category 5 being the most destructive.

IV. Impacts of Tropical Storms:

Strong winds:
- Can cause structural damage to buildings and trees.
- Trigger sandstorms and storm surges.
1. Flooding:
- Intense rains can lead to coastal and river flooding.
- Storm surges increase the risk of coastal flooding.
2. Economic and social effects:
- Loss of crops and damage to infrastructure.
- Population displacement and health issues.
V. Prevention and Preparedness:
1. Early warning systems:
1. Constant monitoring by meteorological agencies.
2. Alert systems to allow evacuations and preparations.

2. Resilient infrastructure:
1. Buildings and construction codes adapted to tropical storms.
2. Coastal protection systems to mitigate storm surges.
Conclusion.

In conclusion, tropical storms are powerful natural phenomena that can have
devastating impacts on affected areas. Understanding their formation, structure, and
prevention methods is crucial to minimize risks and protect vulnerable communities.
