What is unpacking of learning competencies?
Unpacking of learning competencies is the process of breaking
down the competencies into a specific and developmental learning
objectives.

Developmental learning objective –refers to a specific objective


where in skills are sequentially/ logically arranged in increasing
level.
Note: There are LCs with prerequisite content and skills

Unpacking the Standards or Learning Competencies
 Breaks down complex skills or concepts into manageable parts
 Makes curriculum standards and learning competencies more
explicit and actionable through learning objectives.
 Supports instructional planning

 Allow for real-time adjustment and instruction to the depth the
standards require
 Allow a space for collaboration and feedback

When do you unpack?
 if learning competencies have a high cognitive demand which
may lead to students consistently struggling and not making
expected progress in mastering a competency

Note: The expectations (content standards, performance standards) are


unpacked in the Curriculum Guide in terms of learning competencies which
can be adopted in the teaching-learning plan as instructional objectives. (DO
31, s. 2012)

3. Refrain from adding extra or unrelated elements that are not part
of the competency’s primary focus.
