What is intellectual property
• Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of
the mind, such as inventions; literary and
artistic works; designs; and symbols, names
and images used in commerce.
Intellectual property rights

• Intellectual property rights (IPR) refers to the


legal rights given to the inventor or creator to
protect his invention or creation for a certain
period of time.
Types of intellectual property rights
1- Copyrights Act, 1957 (“Copyright Act”

• Copyright: Copyright is a term that


describes ownership or control of the rights
to the use and distribution of certain works
of creative expression, including books,
videos, movies, music, and computer
programs.
2- Trade secret

• A trade secret is any practice or process of a


company that is generally not known outside
of the company.
3- patents
• A patent is a right granted to an inventor by the federal
government that permits the inventor exclusive rights.
These rights exclude others from making, selling, or using
the invention without permission for a period of time.
Example-
• Computer software and hardware
• Chemical formulas and processes
• Genetically engineered bacteria, plants, and animals
• Drugs
• Medical devices
• Furniture design
4- trade marks
• In simple words, a trademark is something that gives
a special identity to your service, product or
business. This identity helps to differentiate it from
the rest. If we talk about the type of trademark, it
can be anything. For example, any graphics,
photograph, slogan, logo, words, color combination,
song, etc., that differentiates the products or services
of a particular company from others in the market.
