Range

The range is defined as the difference between the

largest score in the set of data and the smallest score in
the set of data, XL – XS

What is the range of the following data:

4 8 1 6 6 2 9 3 6 9
The largest score (XL) is 9; the smallest score (XS) is 1; the
range is XL - XS = 9 - 1 = 8

Coefficient of Range= 8/10 =0.8

Different Measures of Dispersion

Find the range of the following distribution:

Age(in 16-18 18-20 20-22 22-24 24-26 26-28

Years) Range , R = ULI – LFI
No. of 0 4 6 8 2 2 Where ULI is the upper boundary of
Students Largest class and LFI is the lower
boundary of Lowest Class Interval
Range=28-16=12
Coefficient of Range= (28-16)/(28+16)
= 12/44
= 0.2727

L6- LESSON8
Merits of Range

1. Range is rigidly defined.

2. Range is simple to understand and easy

to calculate.

3.Range can be used for quality control

purpose. It is also useful for weather
forecast.

L6- LESSON8
Demerits of Range

1.Range is not based upon all observation of given

data.
2.Range is not capable for further mathematical
treatment.
3.Range is much affected by extreme values.
4.Range is much affected by sampling variation.
5.Range can not be calculated for open end classes
without any assumptions.

L6- LESSON8
When to use Range
 The range is used when
o you have ordinal data or
o you are presenting your results to people with
little or no knowledge of statistics
 The range is rarely used in scientific work as it is
fairly insensitive
 It depends on only two scores in the set of data,
XL and XS
 Two very different sets of data can have the same
range:
1 1 1 1 9 vs 1 3 5 7 9
