three Sikkimese ethnicities the Bhutias, Lepchas, Gorkhalis and also plainsmen from other states of India have settled
here. Within the higher peaks of the and with a year-round mil climate, Gangtok is at the center of Sikkim's tourism
industry.
Gangtok rose to prominence as a popular site after the construction of the in 1840. In 1894, the ruling Sikkimese,
transferred the capital to Gangtok. In the early 20th century, Gangtok became a major stopover on the between in and
cities such as (then Calcutta) in . After India won its independence from the in 1947, Sikkim chose to remain an
independent monarchy, with Gangtok as its capital. After Sikkim's merger with India in 1975, Gangtok continued as the
state capital.
Tsomgo LAKE

Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changgu Lake, is a glacial lake in the
East Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim, some 40 kilometres (25 mi) from the
capital Gangtok. Located at an elevation of 3,753 m (12,313 ft), the lake remains frozen
during the winter season. The lake surface reflects different colours with change of seasons
and is held in great reverence by the local Sikkimese people. Buddhist monks
prognosticated after studying the changing colours of the lake.
Teesta River

Teesta River is a 414 km (257 mi) long river that rises in the Pauhunri Mountain of eastern Himalayas,
flows through the Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal and subsequently enters Bangladesh
through Rangpur division. In Bangladesh, it merges with Brahmaputra River which after meeting some
other major rivers of the Bengal delta finally falls into the Bay of Bengal.[1] It drains an area of
12,540 km² (4,840 sq mi).[2] In India, the Teesta flows through Mangan District, Gangtok District,
Pakyong District, Kalimpong district, Darjeeling District, Jalpaiguri District, Cooch Behar districts and the
cities of Rangpo, Jalpaiguri and Mekhliganj. In Bangladesh, it flows through Lalmonirhat District,
Rangpur District, Kurigram District and Gaibandha District. It joins the Brahmaputra River at
Phulchhari Upazila in Bangladesh. 305 km (190 mi) of the river lies in India and 109 km (68 mi) in
Bangladesh. The Teesta is the largest river of Sikkim and second largest river.
Nathula PASS

Nathu La is a mountain pass in the Dongkya Range of the Himalayas between

China's Yadong County in Tibet, and the Indian states of Sikkim. But minor touch of
Bengal in South Asia. The pass, at 4,310 m (14,140 ft), connects the towns of
Kalimpong and Gangtok to the villages and towns of the lower Chumbi Valley.
LACHUNG

Lachung is a town and hill station in northeast Sikkim, India. It is located in the North Sikkim district near the
border with Tibet.[1] Lachung is at an elevation of about 9,600 feet (2,900 m) and at the confluence of the Lachen
and Lachung Rivers, both tributaries of the River Teesta. The word Lachung means "small pass". The town is
approximately 125 kilometres (78 mi) from the capital Gangtok.
The Indian Army has a forward base in the town. Before the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1950, Lachung [2]
was a trading post between Sikkim and Tibet, after which it was closed down. The town's economy has been
boosted by tourism in recent years as the region has been opened up by the Indian government. Tourists come
from all over the world to visit the town between October and May, mostly on their way to the Yumthang Valley
and the Lachung Monastery. Most of Lachung's inhabitants are of Lepcha and Tibetan descent.
Bakthang Waterfall

This is a wonderful waterfall located on the North Sikkim Highway (NHIO) towards Tashi View Point and about 4kms
from Gangtok town. While visiting Tashi View point or returning, it's worth stopping at this roadside waterfall for
sometime. While the height of the fall isn't much, it's the width of the fall that makes it so beautiful. The flowing water
falls over a canopy of green creepers.

The waterfall is fed by Ratey Chu river which originates from the glacial lake called Tamze at an altitude of 12,500ft.
Bakthang Fall is a wonderful sight to take pictures.
Ganesh Tok

Ganesh Tok is a small temple with viewpoint in Gangtok. Situated on top of a hill, the quaint place has
mind-stirring views - the Kanchenjunga hill can be seen in its true form of glory from here and is at its
best especially in the morning. The temple (dedicated to Lord Ganesh) is, however, so small that it can
only fit one person at a time.

Colourful flags are tied across the stairs making it stand out. There is a place where shoes can be kept
safe, and hands can be washed before entering the temple. There is also a lounge and a balcony in front
of the temple which is the main attraction of the place.
Gonganj Monastery

Gonjang Monastery is located at Fatak Bojhogari near Tashi Viewpoint in Gangtok, Sikkim, around 8 kilometres from Gangtok SNT
Bus Station. It is one of Gangtok’s most famous monasteries and one of the top Gangtok attractions, with an elevation of 6066 feet.

H.E. Tingkye Gonjang Rimpoche founded Gonjang Monastery in 1981. Yolmo Terton Ngakchang Shakya Zangpo, a 15th century
Nyingmapa Terton, was acknowledged as his manifestation. The monastery adheres to the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism’s
Jangter tradition. The monk pupils are taught monastic education as well as Tibetan language and English. The monastery
disseminates knowledge about Indian and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy based on moral principles through close and comparative
study.
