LET’S LOOK AT TERM ONE ASSESSMENTS:

• TASK 1: ORAL LISTENING COMPREHENSION (15)

• TASK 2: WRITING ESSAYS (50)
• TASK 3: TRANSACTIONALS (25)
• TASK 4: ORAL UNPREPARED SPEECH (15)

TASK 1(LISTENING COMPREHENSION)-CRITICALLY
STABLE
WHAT WENT WELL? CHALLENGES?
• 95/100 learners obtained a pass ‘sufficient’ mark
• Learners showed an average of 55% in understanding
the text, and could pick up the main idea of the text.
• Three learners got distinctions (low number but
highlights potential)
• The ability to identify key words in a lengthy text
• The ability to mark key words in the question
• Time, following the reading pace whilst maintaining
attention
• Meeting the Department of Education’s 60% oral pass
mark, most learners fell under the 50s.
• Learners who went for intervention only increased
mark by +/- 2 points
 TASK 2 (WRITING ESSAYS)-IT FLOODED HERE!
WHAT WENT WELL?
• Eight learners got above 60%(low
but showed potential)
• Few punctuation errors
CHALLENGES?
• The overall pass average for the task is 42% which is extremely low!
• Majority could not show a clear distinction of the different types of
essays(Narrative, Argumentative, Reflective ,Descriptive…)
• Applying an objective writing style in essays that are based on topics like
Discipline, Load shedding.
• The topic about Angels was abused and not given descriptive justice.
• Using “I”, ‘’You”, “Us”, “We”…in texts that require an objective approach
(imposing the writer’s opinions and experiences on the reader).
• Essay planning-80% did not effectively plan their drafts, which made it hard to
organize and present ideas in a logical manner.
• Spelling, Tenses, Sentence Construction, Paragraph Flow, Vocabulary, CHAT
GPT!
 TASK 3 (TRANSACTIONALS)-IT WAS OKAY
WHAT WENT WELL?
• The obituary, dialogue ‘scaffolded’ the 50% pass
average (a good application of format with a room for
improvement in vocabulary )
• There is good potential in transactional writing,
shorter word count allows learners to avoid repetitive
ideas, to be more creative.
• Thank you for not abusing the dialogue greeting,
always cut to the chase.
CHALLENGES?
• Formal letter (format, register, planning, signature)
• Email-some learners did not understand the topic
(format, register, planning)
• Sentence Construction, Punctuation, Structure,
Spelling
• The Obituary was done in a very robotic
manner(sounded like the template)
• Dialogue showed less use of figures of expression
which made the text dull.
 TASK 4(ORAL- GROUP DISCUSSIONS)-GOOD

• 65% pass average • Limited use of academic vocabulary and sentence

• Great signs of interest in the concepts of the book
• Pro-active participation and communication
• Improved understanding of Dorian Gray Novel
• Creative inputs on the underlying themes and sub-
themes
• Creative organisation of ideas in an artistic manner
• Improved self confidence
• Authentic and democratic approach in learning
construction, to verbally convey a message effectively
• Knitting ideas in a coherent manner in discussion and
referencing specific points from the book
• Use of body language and academic mannerisms to
support a point of view/idea
• Time management
TASK 5 (TEST)-IT FLOODED HERE!
WHAT WENT WELL?
• Summary key points were accurately
identified
• Some components of the advertisement and
the cartoon were fairly understood but not
enough to get a pass average above 45% in
this section
CHALLENGE?
• Comprehension was poorly attempted
• Reading with understanding
• Breaking down question terminology
• Re-phrasing the summary key points in your
own words and maintaining logical sentence
construction in the paragraph
• Interpreting visual texts and inter-grated
language concepts properly.
