Protocol

 A protocol is a set of rules needed for communication

and data transfer between devices.
 It determines how data will be sent and received and
how errors will be fixed.
 All devices will have to have the same protocol, e.g. IP
(internet protocol) to be able to communicate via the
internet.

4
VoIP (Voice over internet protocol)

 VoIP is a way of making a telephone call via a network

such as the internet.
 (Transfer voice data in the same way as digital data.)

5
VoIP (Voice over internet protocol)

 Equipment needed:
 Special Skype phone or a headset
 A program e.g. Skype.
 Webcam or video phone, to make a video call.

7
Advantages of VoIP

 No need for a telephone line – you can make a call

anywhere as long as there are internet services, such
as a broadband connection, available.
 One can make VoIP calls from any computer, cell
phone or tablet.
 Very cheap. Local and international calls cost the
same . Skype-to-Skype calls are free. You pay,
however, for the data that is transferred in the
process.
8
Advantages of VoIP
(Continue)

 Possible to make a video call, in which case you will be

able to see the person you are talking to.
 Possible to make conference calls – speak to more
than one person at the same time.
 Can send other kinds of data, e.g. text messages,
photos, videos, etc.
 Programs needed for VoIP calls are usually free.

9
Disadvantages of VoIP

 Sound quality of VoIP calls is not as good as ‘n normal

telephone call.
 Can use a lot of cap, especially when a video call is
made.
 Transmission can break up during the call. Some data
may be lost or data transfer may be slow.
 Need to buy data bundles if calls are made to an
ordinary phone.

10
Good practices of VoIP

 Don’t use video if the transmission breaks up

regularly or becomes slow.
 Ensure that the person you contact, agrees to the use
of VoIP, since ‘n lot of cap is used, especially with
video calls.

11

12
Advantages of FTP

 An easy way to transfer large amounts of data.

 The user has control over the data transferred.
 On some sites, data is protected by username and
password.

13
Disadvantages of FTP

 Data that is transferred is not encrypted.

 Connection to FTP sites may be interrupted during
transfer.
 FTP is not a secure protocol.

14
Good practices when using FTP

 Ensure that you have a good antivirus program

installed on your computer to prevent distribution of
viruses and other malware.
 Ensure that the firewall on your computer is
activated.

15
Activity

 Define the following terms:

 Protocol
 VoIP
 FTP

16
Activity

 Describe how you will establish a telephone call using

VoIP.
Your description must include the hardware and
software needed.
 Name THREE advantages and THREE disadvantages
of VoIP.
 Discuss safety measurements needed for data
