Modal verbs

Modal verbs are a special class2 of verbs that add degrees of


ability, possibility, permission or obligation to another verb.
Ability

Modals Of Ability
we use "CAN/COULD" to describe ability.
and we use "CAN'T/COULDN'T"to describe
the absence of ability.

Can refers to ability in the present.


and
Could refers to ability in the past.

Possibility

we use "MAY,MIGHT,AND
. COULD" to describe
possibility.

I may eat dinner at 08:00PM
She could be lost
Permission

Modals of permission are used in English to ask for permission or to express


permission meaning.We can use "CAN/COULD,MAY"
Permission
Example:
1.Can I borrow your pen?
2.Can I ask you something?
3.Could I borrow your pen?
4.May I help you?
Obligation
There are two types of modal verbs of obligation ;
1.those that primarily express a firm obligation or
necessity - must and have to.

2.those that express a recommendation or moral


obligation - should and ought to.
Obligation
Example:
1.You ought to help you neighbour in need
2. You must answer at least one question
3.You should eat a healthy food.
