Peripheral Devices

INPUT DEVICES
 Devices that input information in the computer

 Key Board  Touch Panel

 Mouse  Light Pen
 Scanner  Optical Mark Reader
 Joystick  Optical Character Reader
 Digital Camera  Magnetic Ink Character Reader
 Microphone  Bar Code Readers
Keyboard

It is a device used to
type information,
commands and data
into the computer.

Track Ball:
Joy Stick:
DIGITAL CAMERA

Digital Cameras are

peripheral input devices
that allow users to create
pictures and/or movies in a
digital format.
Output Devices

Monitor
Printer
Speakers
I

It is a TV like screen

used to show pictures

and words.
Printer

Used to make a paper

copy of the information
into the computer.
Speakers

Device used for the

output of data in the
form of sound.
Types of Monitors

CRT Monitors: Cathode Ray Tube

LCD Monitors: Liquid Crystal Display

A Cathode Ray Tube is
used to produce the
image. A phosphorescent
screen is hit by the
electrons to produce
image.
LCD Monitor
Light modulating

property of the LIQUID

CRYSTALS are used to

produce the image.

Types of Printer
 Dot Matrix Printer
 Ink Jet
 Laser Jet
 Daisy wheel
 Chain printer
 Drum printer
 Serial printer
They create characters by
striking pins against an
ink ribbon.
 Can make carbon  Noisy
copies  Can print only one
 Lowest printing text & simple
cost per page graphics
 Does not stop  Limited color &

suddenly if runs out performance

 We can use

continuous paper
Ink Jet Printer

It works by propelling
variably-sized droplets of
liquid
•.
•.

+ -

 Quietness Slow
 Less expensive Printing not as precise as
 Good quality laser.
 Less time  Ink cartridges can be
 Easy to operate

expensive over time

Dry ink (toner) particles
are picked up and
fused on to the
paper.
+ -
 Laser prints are  Buying a laser printer
generally very high and can be expensive when
very accurate. compared to an inkjet
 For high volume  Color laser printers are
printing laser printers significantly more
are considerably expensive than a color
cheaper to run inkjet.
 Printing is fast so they
can handle large
volumes.
Memory

Primary memory

Secondary memory
What is Primary Memory?

It is the inbuilt storage space of the

computer.
Primary memory - Components
 RAM

 ROM

 CACHE

 Register
RAM: Random access memory

It is a type of computer
memory that can be
accessed randomly.

It is a volatile memory –
data is lost when power is
switched off.
Ram Features:-

• 1. Most widely used memory.
• 2. Less Expensive
• 3. Semi-conductor memory
• 4. Allows both to read from and write into
memory
• 5. Data and information fed into are subjected
to loss when power is switched off.
ROM: Read Only Memory

Memory used to store permanently written data.

Eg. Software to bring up the computer.

User can not alter its contents.

ROM – classification

• # PROM: Programmable Read Only Memory

• # EPROM: Erasable Programmable Read Only

Memory
Cache

The cache is a smaller, faster memory which

stores copies of the data from the most
frequently used main memory locations.
Cache - Features

• They hold a copy of the frequently accessed data.

• Generally cache memories are known as L1, L2 caches

• Modern computers have 3 cache memories

• Expensive.
Register

A temporary holding area for data.

It is also called buffered memory as it acts like a

buffer between CPU and memory.
Memory Registers - Features

Act like small data areas which hold the

information temporarily.
Optional in some systems

Suitable for the system where a number of

computers share a common main memory.
They slow down the computer in a small extent
SECONDARY MEMORY

Hard disk, optical disk, floppy drives, CD ROM

etc.
