Brazil alone occupies nearly half of the continent. This
region’s landforms mainly consist of plains and
plateaus, such as: the Amazon Basin, the Brazilian
Highlands, and the Mato Grosso Plateau. Some of
Brazil’s major physical features are rain forests, rivers,
and waterfalls. Three of the most famous examples of
these features are the Amazon River, the Amazon
Rainforest, and Iguaçu Falls.

history
Until the arrival of the Europeans, Brazil was settled by
stone-age tribes. Spanish explorer Vicente Yañez Pinzon
reaches the northeastern coast of Brazil during a voyage
under his command. Then the Portuguese arrived in 1500
and Pedro Alvares Cabral claimed Brazil as a colony of
Portugal. The first settlement was founded in 1532 and
Portugal began to take more of the land. Brazil continued
to expand through wars and battles.

history

The Portuguese defeated the French to take Rio de Janeiro

and also took over several Dutch and British outposts.
Soon Brazil was one of the largest territories in the world.
Today it is the 5th largest country in the world. In 1807,
the Portuguese royal family escaped from Napoleon and
fled to Brazil. Although the king, Dom Joao VI, returned
to Portugal in 1821, his son remained in Brazil and
became emperor of the country. He declared Brazil's
independence in 1822.
history

In 1889, Deodoro Da Fonseca led a coup to take over

the government from the emperor. He changed the
government to a republic ruled by a constitution. Over
the years since, the country has been ruled by elected
presidents as well as by military coups. Lula da Silva
was elected president in 2002. He was Brazil's first
working-class president .In 2011 Dilma Vana Rousseff
became the first woman president of Brazil.

People and culture

The culture of Brazil is primarily Western

and is derived from Portuguese culture,[1]
but presents a very diverse nature
showing that an ethnic and cultural mixing
occurred in the colonial period involving
mostly Indigenous people of the coastal
and most accessible riverine areas,
Portuguese people and African people. In
the late 19th and early 20th centuries,
together with further waves of Portuguese
colonization, Italians, Spaniards, Germans,
Austrians, Levantine Arabs (Syrians and
Lebanese), Armenians, Japanese, Chinese
, Koreans, Greeks, Poles, Helvetians,
Ukrainians and Russians settled in Brazil,
playing an important role in its culture as it
started to shape a multicultural and
multiethnic society.[2]
Fun facts

2: There are many theories as to how Brazil got its name. The most popular and widely
believed though is that it stems from the Caesalpinia echinata tree that is also known as
the brazilwood tree.
3: Also unique to its name, the capital of the country since 1960 is Brasilia that is also a
UNESCO World Heritage site. It was previously Rio De Janerio.
4: Brazil shares a border with ten other countries including Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia,
French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.
5: It is estimated that the Amazon in Brazil has more un-contacted tribes than any other
destinations in the world. The government department of FUNAI has confirmed the
presence of 67 isolated tribes who have no contact with the outside.
