2.1: Necessity and reading of Civil Engineering Drawing 01

Necessity and reading of Civil Engineering Drawing

 As a electrical engineer it is necessary to read a civil engineer drawing because by reading civil drawing
we get the locations of windows, doors, Passage, w/c, bathrooms, dimensions and height of walls etc.
 Such civil plans are first of all studied by an electrical engineer and has to decide the the type of wiring
and wiring route.
 Once the wiring route is decided then the main circuit is divided into sub-circuits according to IE rules.
 By calculating all electrical parameters like total sub circuits, size and rating of fuse, mcb, wire and conduit
etc. an electrical engineer should draw wiring route diagram, electrical plan on civil drawing and single
line diagram of electrical plan.

Step-3 Calculation of total length of conduit

1. From switch board to fan
1.5 (v) + 0.5 (h) + 0.5 (v) + 2 (h) = 4.5 m

2. From fan to lamp 1

2.5 (h) + 0.5 (v) = 3 m

3. From fan to lamp 2

2.5 (h) + 0.5 (v) = 3 m

4. From incoming to switchboard

2 (h) + 0.5 (v) = 2.5 m

Length of conduit = 4.5 + 3 + 3 + 2.5= 13 m

Adding 10% waste factor in conduit
Total length of conduit is = 13 + 10% wastage

Total load 1080 200 600 60 5000 1000

Total load of restaurant = 7940 Watt

Department of Electrical Engineering www.sandipfoundation.org

2.4:Design, Drawing and Estimation of commercial installation 01

Step-2 - Calculate the total load current of the restaurant

As the total load is more than 3kW, then we have to use 3-phase 4-wire service connection for the
restaurant
Assuming p.f. of installation as 0.8

To calculate maximum current ( Short circuit Current)

Ish = 14.32 x 1.5 = 21.48 Amp

For main supply we will provide PVC wire of 7/20, having current rating is 28 A

Department of Electrical Engineering www.sandipfoundation.org

2.4:Design, Drawing and Estimation of commercial installation 01

Step-3 - Calculate the total lighting load

Total light and fan load = 1940 Watt

Total points of lighting load = 43 points

Step-3 - Calculate the total power load

Total power load = 6000 Watt

Total points of power load = 6 points

Department of Electrical Engineering www.sandipfoundation.org

2.4:Design, Drawing and Estimation of commercial installation 01

Step-4 - Calculate the number of sub-circuits for power load

 We will divide 6 power points into 3 sub circuits having 2000 watt each.

 Hence, for sub-circuits we can provide the 7/22 PVC wire having current rating of 20 A.

Step-5 - Calculate the load current of each sub circuit

 Total load on R-phase will be divided into 2 sub-circuits

Sub circuit 1= 6 tubes + 2 Ceiling fans = 360 W 1.95 A

Sub circuit 2 = 3 tubes + 1 Ceiling fans + 1 Exhaust fan = 280 W 1.52 A

 Total load on Y-phase will be divided into 2 sub-circuits

Sub circuit 1= 6 tubes + 2 Ceiling fans = 360 W 1. 95 A

Sub circuit 2 = 3 tubes + 1 Ceiling fans + 1 Exhaust fan = 280 W 1.52A

 Total load on Y-phase will be divided into 2 sub-circuits

Sub circuit 1= 5 tubes + 1 Ceiling fans + 2 CFL = 290 W 1.57 A

Sub circuit 2 = 4 tubes + 3 Ceiling fans + 2 CFL = 370 W 2.01 A

Department of Electrical Engineering www.sandipfoundation.org
2.4:Design, Drawing and Estimation of commercial installation 01
