Friction

The Force That

Opposes Motion
(Contact force)
What is Friction?
• Friction is the force that opposes the motion of one
surface sliding, rolling, or rubbing against another.

• Key Point: It's present in our

daily lives and affects how
objects move.

Types of Friction
Static Friction: When an object is at rest,
resisting an applied force.

Kinetic Friction: Opposing the motion of an

object already in motion.

TOO Heavy!!
As you exert force to move a
lawnmower, you'll notice that there is
Kinetic Friction a resistance to its motion. This
resistance is due to kinetic friction.
Kinetic Friction: Opposing the motion of an
object already in motion.

Try this: Rub both hands together and see

what happens!

When our hands rub against each other the

friction between our hands create heat!
Rolling Friction
Rolling Friction: The force resisting the
motion of a rolling object.

Imagine a bowling ball rolling on the

ground. Rolling friction occurs as the
ball's surface interacts with the ground.
Not only solids!!
Fluid Friction
Fluid Friction: The force opposing an object
moving through a fluid (liquid or gas).

Imagine walking through water. The

resistance encountered while moving through
a fluid (water, in this case) is fluid friction.
Causes of Friction
Surface Roughness: Rough surfaces create more
friction.

Applied Force: The force used to push, pull, or

slide an object.

Material Interaction: Different materials have

different friction levels.
Friction in Action
For those who enjoy ice skating, it's
important to keep in mind the role of
friction to maintain proper balance.

In order to ice skate, there must be as

little friction as possible so that the
skaters are able to glide over the ice so
smoothly.

Reducing Friction
Lubricants: help to reduce friction.

They creating a thin surface layer between

surfaces so that the moving surfaces do not
directly rub against each other.

Example: In a bicycle, oil lubricant helps

to reduce friction between the gear and
chain.
Helpful Friction
However, have you ever considered that
friction could be helpful in certain
circumstances?

Example: car tires on the road need friction

to allow for the car to stop when necessary.
Friction in Sports - Activity
Choose two of the following sports:

• Baseball
• Basketball
• Football Due today. Write 3 examples for
• Volleyball two sports.

Answer the following question with a partner:

How can athletes use or combat friction in their
movements.
