What is Laptop
 Laptop
 A small, portable computer -- small enough that it can sit
on your lap
 A laptop computer, sometimes called a notebook
computer by manufacturers, is a battery- or AC-powered
personal computer generally smaller than a briefcase
that can easily be transported and conveniently used.
Types of Laptop
 1. Traditional laptop - is a clamshell, with a screen on one of its inner
sides and a keyboard on the opposite, facing the screen.
 Devices of this form are commonly called a 'traditional laptop' or
notebook, particularly if they have a screen size of 11 to 17 inches

 2. Subnotebook - or an ultraportable, is a laptop designed and marketed


with an emphasis on portability (small size, low weight, and often longer
battery life). Subnotebooks are usually smaller and lighter than standard
laptops, weighing between 0.8 and 2 kg (2-5 lb), with a battery life
exceeding 10 hours.

 3. Netbook - an inexpensive, light-weight, energy-efficient
form of laptop, especially suited for wireless communication
and Internet access.
 The name netbook (with net short for Internet) is used as
"the device excels in web-based computing performance“.

 4. Desktop Replacement - is a class of large device which is


not intended primarily for mobile use. They are bulkier and not
as portable as other laptops, and are intended for use as
compact and transportable alternatives to a desktop computer.
 They are capable of containing more powerful components
and have a 15-inch or larger display.

 5. Rugged Laptop - A rugged laptop is designed to reliably operate in
harsh usage conditions such as strong vibrations, extreme temperatures,
and wet or dusty environments.
Laptop Problems
 1. Computer doesn’t turn on at all.
 2. Screen is blank.
 3. Laptop turns on and off repeatedly.
 4. Laptop makes noise while running.
 5. Laptop shuts down or freezes.
 6. Battery not charging properly.
 7. Screen light fails.
 8. Strange or garbled image on the screen.
 9. Some keyboard keys stopped working.
 10. Keyboard has missing or broken keys.
 11. Repetitive beep sound on startup.
 12. Liquid spill.
Some points to remember when undertaking
laptop computer repairs..

 Don’t disassemble a machine if it doesn’t need it.


 Use the right tools.
 Try to do it in a clean environment.
 Test the machine properly beforehand
 Keep any parts you remove in a safe place.
 Keep the screws with the parts they have been taken from.
 Put the right size screws back into parts when it's time to reassemble it.
 Observe how connectors work before disconnecting them.
 Make notes for yourself if you need to as you pull apart the machine.
 Check all cables and connectors are fastened as you go along.
 Try not to use screwdrivers to lever or remove plastic parts.
 If a part won't budge look for hidden screws or a screw you may have
missed.

Basic Steps:
1. Turn off the laptop and close the lid

2. Turn the laptop upside down on flat surface

3. Remove the battery


4. Remove all the Philips screw and place on container
Some points to remember when undertaking
laptop computer repairs..

 Note: Some laptops have the screw holes marked with screw types and
sizes. Some use symbols to indicate screw types. Take notice of what
screws come out of where.

5. Remove the covers for individual components, such as the hard drive and the
memory, from the bottom of the laptop. Keep all internal components with the
covers that secure them

Tips on taking care of your laptop
 Screen
 avoid poking the screen w/ fingers or other object
 always be careful when closing the lid
 clean the screen w/ proper cleaner
 Keyboard
 always clean your keyboard for dust
 be careful about eating and drinking
 clean with antiseptic wipes
 Take Care of the Battery
 don’t plug the laptop most of the time
 recharge when the capacity is around 10% - 15%
 if connected to main long period, remove the battery
 at night, always remove the plug

 Avoid Sudden Movements


 Current laptops have mechanical parts
 Sudden jerks or drops can damage hard disk
 Listen to Unusual Noises
 unusual noise means something's wrong
 ‘Click of Death’
 Keep the Air Vents Open
 don’t block the vents, it may cause overheating
 avoid it on surface like bed sheet, carpet, foam
 avoid using pillow as “laptop stand”
 use cooling fan
 Know your Laptop
 Pamper your Laptop
 invest important accessories, e.g. sleeve, cooling fan
 let it rest for a while
 Keep it cool - user
 be easy on your laptop
 Do not slam the LCD Screen in anger
