The function of reproductive system is
replication. The sex hormones play an
important role both in the development
and function of the reproductive organ
and in sexual behavior and drives.
Male Reproductive System
The reproductive role of male is to produce and deliver
sperm to the female reproductive tract. These functions require
four different structure. These are…
1. Testes ‒ Epididymis
2. Accessory glands ‒ Ductus deferens
‒ Seminal vesicles ‒ Ejaculatory duct
‒ Prostate ‒ Urethra
‒ Bulbourethral gland 4. Penis
3. Accessory ducts
Testes
‒ Are oval-shaped organs lie within the scrotum
‒ Secretes male sex hormone (androgen and testrosterone) and
produce sperm.
‒ Sperm are delivered to the exterior through a system of ducts:
epididymis, ductus deferens and the urethra
Accessory glands
‒ Vesicles produce seminal plasma (semen) that provide main
energy and aid movement of sperm.
‒ Prostate produce seminal fluid that makes sperm motile and
neutralizes vaginal acidity.
‒ Bulbourethral secretes clear fluid that neutralizes the acidity of
urine and act as a lubricant
‒ They empty their secretions into the ducts during ejaculation to
Accessory ducts
‒ Epididymis is the passage way of sperm that store sperm until
maturity and propel sperm to ductus deferens.
‒ Ductus deferens transports sperm by peristalsis during peak
stimulation.
‒ Ejaculatory duct receive secretion from seminal vesicles and
transport these to prostate.
‒ Accessory ducts carry the sperm to the point of ejaculation from
penis.
The Penis
‒ A copulatory organ designed to deliver sperm into the female
reproductive trace.
‒ It also carries urine through urethra to the outside during urination.
Male Secondary Sex Characteristics
Male hormones make their appearance at puberty
and induce changes in non-reproductive organs,
including
‒ Appearance of pubic, axillary and facial hair
‒ Enhanced growth of the chest and deepening of the
voice
‒ Skin thickens and becomes oily
‒ Bones grow and increase in density
‒ Skeletal muscles increase in size and mass
‒ Testosterone is the basis of libido in both males and
females
Female Reproductive System
The reproductive role of female is to produce
ovum, to carry and protect the developing embryo
after fertilization and to produce milk by mammary
glands. It consists of…
3. Uterus
4. Vagina
Ovary
‒ Paired organs on each side of the uterus held in place by
several ligaments
‒ Ovaries are the primary female reproductive organs that
produce ovum and secrete female sex hormones (estrogen and
progesterone).
Vagina
‒ Thin-walled tube lying between the bladder and the rectum,
extending from the cervix to the exterior of the body
‒ It is a canal for menstrual flow and a birth canal during
childbirth and the organ of copulation.
‒ A fold of vagina mucosa called hymen that partially blocks
vaginal entrance in virgin.
External Genitalia: Vulva
‒ This includes mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora,
clitoris and vestibular glands.
‒ Perineum is the diamond-shaped region between the pubic
arch and coccyx.
