Understanding

chicken infectious
Anemia
Good morning and welcome!
I am Bijay Gautam
Roll no. 9
5th semester, B.V.Sc & A.H.,NPI
I am here to present you about chicken infectious
anemia(CIA).
You can find me at @ze_bzay 2
CHICKEN
INFECTIOUS
ANEMIA(CIA)
What is chicken infectious
anemia?
▸ Definition: CIA is a viral Immunosuppresant disease that
affects chickens immune system and chickens as a whole,
causing significant economic losses in the poultry industry.
▸ Caused by: Chicken Infectious Anemia Virus (CIAV) a small,
non-enveloped DNA virus from the Circoviridae family.

4
Transmission of chicken infectious
anemia
▸ Vertical transmission (from hen to chick).
▸ Horizontal transmission (through contaminated
litter, equipment, or insects).
▸ Iatrogenic transmission (through contaminated
vaccines or needles).

5
Pathogenesis
Entry of virus Into blood stream

Replication of virus In lymphoid tissues, especially the thymus and bursa of

Fabricius

Destruction of lymphocytes, leading to immunosuppression

Impact on the chicken’s immune system, making it susceptible to secondary infections

Secondary infections
and complications
7
Clinical Findings of Infectious Canine
Hepatitis
▸ Reduced appetite, weight loss, decreased egg production.
▸ Progressive clinical signs: anemia, pale comb, increased
mortality, immunosuppression.
▸ Subclinical infections: birds may appear healthy but serve as
carriers, spreading the virus.

8
Gross lesions
▸ Organs are pale
▸ The thymus is generally atrophied, and the bursa of
Fabricius may be small.
▸ Bone marrow is pale or yellow.
▸ Hemorrhages may be present in or under the skin and in
muscle and other organs.

9
Microscopic features
▸ Lymphoid cell populations are depleted in primary and
secondary lymphoid organs.
▸ Most notable is severe lymphocytic depletion of the thymic
cortex.
▸ Granulocytic and erythrocytic compartments in the bone marrow
are atrophic.

10
Diagnosis of Infectious Canine
Hepatitis
▸ Clinical signs and history
▸ Laboratory diagnosis:
1.Detection of viral DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
2.Serological tests such as enzyme linked immunosorbent
assay(ELISA).
3.Histopathological examination of affected tissue.

11
Some images to show the
clinical and pathological
symptoms:
1.a shows chicken
depressed.
2.b shows their bleeding,
which manifested as blue
wings.
3.c shows Bone marrow as
fatty.
4.d shows bleeding in
pectoral muscle.
5.e shows Slight bleeding in
the gut.
6. shows ischemic foci on
liver surface.

Thank you!!!
