VOLUME OF A FRUSTUM

LEARNING OBJECTIVE
1. Calculate the volume of a frustum

Education for the Real World

Volume of a frustum

Buckets and waste paper bins are often in the form of frustums. If the
top of a cone or pyramid is cut off along a plane parallel to the base,
the remaining figure is called frustum. The two diagrams below show
two frustums with a square base and circular base.

Volume of Frustums – Method 1
• Then volume of a frustum is calculated by first calculating the volume
of the original cone or pyramid, then subtracting the volume of the
portion removed.
• Volume of a frustum Volume of original cone Volume of cone
removed.
• The cone removed will always be mathematically similar to the
original cone.
• When finding the volume of a frustum the same formula applies to
both the frustum of a pyramid and the frustum of a cone.
