APPLICATION ON WATER

CONSERVATION PRACTICES
ON GRAZING LANDS TREES
AND SHRUBS
WHAT IS WATER CONSERVATION?

Water conservation refers to conserve or

reducing use of water, through
technological or social methods.
The goal of water conservation includes;
Sustainability
Energy conservation
Habitat conservation
EXPOSURE OF WATER CYCLE
WHAT IS GRAZE LAND?

A field covered with grass, herbage and

suitable for grazing by livestock.
Lay, pastures, pasture land, lea cow
pasture, grass land, rural area, country
side area and area outside the cities and
town.
A TIPICAL GRAZE LAND
WATER CONSERVATION IN
GRAZE LAND, TREES AND SHRUBS
Protecting soil from erosive wind, water,
using more energy efficient ways to
produce good food and fiber conserving
water, providing habitat for wild life,
sustaining forage and grazing plant using
plant to sequester green house gases and
increase soil organic matter to produce bio
mass and raw material for industrial
purpose also.
GRAZING LAND WATER
CONSERVATION INITIATIVE (GLWCI)
The Grazing Land Water Conservation
Initiative (GLWCI) was funded to provide
high quality technical assistance on
privately owned or natural grazing land on
voluntarily and to increase awareness of
the importance of grazing land.
WORKING AT GLWCI PROJECT
If not conducted then

 Impair or endanger the land.

 Materially affect the lands productivity and

capacity.

 Represent unusual damage due to wind and

water erosion.
PRACTICES
Restoring Water Level
 A graze land with high water table or steady
water supply will damp throughout most of
year. If the area has been drained you may
need to restore the original water level by
blocking a nearby ditch or drain.
 In some instance you may have;
1) Build a low bund
2) Install a partially submerged
3) Build a low dam across weir stream graze
land.
Protecting Graze Land from Live Stock
for Over Grazing
By fencing
By alternate pasture
By forage and fodder
Controlling Erosion and Sediment
By planting trees
Don’t fallow the land
By Avoiding Pugging and Compaction
When stock intensively wet soil, the soil
aggregates are broken down and spaces
are reduced called pugging.
It causes;
Poor draiange
Poor plant growth
More top soil runoff
Management of Runoff and Stock
Losses in Graze Land
Fencing drain and wet land
Fencing streams and rivers
Reduce Stock Losses
Reduce stock losses in water ways
Healthier stock
Improved stock and grazing management

Stream Barbs (A similar bandway weirs
constructed for large rocks).
Willow Post (7 to 10 cm in diameter post).
Wattle Fence (Constructed for material
such as straw, tree branches twigs.
