INTRODUCTION

Stone mastic Asphalt SMA is a hot-mix asphalt mixture that is

made up of a coarse aggregate skeleton, a binder-rich mastic
(a mixture of bitumen and filler), and a fine aggregate
skeleton. Is a type of Asphalt mixture used in road
construction due to is high resistance to rutting and
deformation . However, high cost of traditional mineral fillers
used in SMA limits its widespread use. Rice husk, an
agricultural waste produce, has the potential to be used as a
cost-effective and sustainable alternative filler for rice SMA.
The engineering properties of SMA using rice husk as filler are
not well understood, and therefore, research is need to
investigate its effects on the strength, stiffness, and durability
of the mixture. This introduction set the stage for a deeper
exploration of the topic and highlights the potential benefit of
using rice husk as filler in SMA.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

Stone mastic asphalt (SMA) is a type of asphalt mixture

used in road construction due to its high resistance to
rutting and deformation. However, the high cost of
traditional mineral fillers used in SMA limits its
widespread use. Therefore, there is a need to explore
alternative fillers that are cost-effective and
environmentally friendly. Rice husk is an agricultural
waste product that is abundant in many countries and has
the potential to be used as a filler in SMA. However, the
engineering properties of SMA using rice husk as a filler
are not well understood. Therefore, the problem statement
is to investigate the effect of rice husk as a filler on the
engineering properties of SMA, including its strength,
stiffness, and durability, in order to determine its feasibility
as a sustainable alternative filler for SMA.
AIM
AIMAND
ANDOBJECTIVE
OBJECTIVE
• Aim
• To investigate the feasibility of using Rice Husk Ash as
filler in Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) and to assess the
engineering properties of the resulting Asphalt mixtures.
Objectives
• To investigate the physical and chemical properties of rice
husk ash as a filler material.
• To prepare SMA using different percentage of rice husk
(RHA) (0%, 100 %,) and test the engineering properties of
this asphalt mixture.
• To determine the marshal stability ……
• To evaluate the effect of RHA on the workability, stiffness,
and durability of the SMA mixtures.
METHODOLOGY
There are stages to investigate method used in the
Laboratory:
1. Obtaining the material
2. Determination of the chemical composition of
Rice Husk.
3. Determination of the properties of the
Aggregates.
4. Marshall Mix Design.
5. Mix specimens preparation.
6. Testing the Mastic Stone Asphalt.
MATERIALS PROVIDED.

In this study material provide is as follows:

regates.
Bitumen.
Mineral Fillers
CONCLUSION

I would like to conclude this report by stating that

the few months spent with Julius Berger Nigeria PLC
were not wasted at all as I learnt a whole lot both on
and off field.
Through my training I was able to appreciate my
chosen course of study even more because I had the
opportunity to blend the theoretical knowledge
acquired from school with the practical hands on
application of knowledge gained here to perform
very important tasks that contributed in a way to my
productivity in the company.
