SNIPPETS IN
PREPARING ACTION
RESEARCH IN THE
CLASSROOM
CONTENTS
01 ACTIVITY 1 02 ACTIVITY 2

03 ACTIVITY 3 04 ACTIVITY 4
01

Activity 1: Inquiry begins with situations that are

problematic, confusing, uncertain and conflicting
and so does Action Research. Sometimes it helps
to use a variety of questions as starting points to
identify an issue you would like to research (Caro-
Bruce, 2000):
Research Tittle: "The Influence of
Parental Involvement on Students'
Academic Performance in Elementary
Education"
01

I would like to improve parental involvement in my elementary

education classroom to enhance students' academic
performance.
I am really curious about the specific ways in which parental
involvement impacts students' academic performance in
elementary education.

Something I think would really make a difference is

strengthening the partnership between parents and teachers to
create a supportive learning environment for students.
01

Something I would like to change is the level of communication

and collaboration between parents and teachers to ensure a
more effective and holistic approach to students' education.
What happens to student learning in my classroom when I
actively engage parents in the learning process and seek their
input and support?

How can I implement strategies to involve parents more

actively in their child's education and create opportunities for
them to contribute to their child's academic success?
01

How can I improve the understanding and

awareness of parents regarding their role in
supporting their child's academic performance
and create a stronger home-school
connection?
02

Activity 2:
After inquiring based from your
personal experiences,
observations anchored on
queries or relevant encounters,
be able to share three (3) Action
Research Topics aligned to your
degree of specialization.
Reason it out.
02

Topic 1: The Impact of Inquiry-Based Learning on

Students' Critical Thinking Skills in Elementary
Education.
 Reason(s) why this topic: Inquiry-based learning is an
effective teaching approach that promotes student
engagement and enhances critical thinking skills. By
investigating the impact of inquiry-based learning on
students' critical thinking skills in elementary education,
teachers can determine the effectiveness of this
approach and implement it more widely to improve
student outcomes.
02

Topic 2: The Influence of Parental Involvement on

Students' Academic Performance in Elementary
Education.
 Reason(s) why this topic: Parental involvement plays a crucial
role in students' academic success. By exploring the influence
of parental involvement on students' academic performance in
elementary education, educators can identify effective strategies
to engage parents in their child's learning process. This
research topic will help establish a strong home-school
partnership and enhance students' overall academic
achievement.
02

Topic 3: The Effectiveness of Differentiated

Instruction in Meeting the Diverse Needs of Students
in Elementary Education.
 Reason(s) why this topic: In a diverse classroom, students
have different learning styles, abilities, and needs.
Differentiated instruction is an instructional approach that
tailors teaching methods and content to meet the individual
needs of students. By studying the effectiveness of
differentiated instruction in meeting the diverse needs of
students in elementary education, teachers can enhance their
instructional practices to ensure all students receive quality
education and achieve their full potential.
03

ACTIVITY 3:
Out of the three (3) topics presented in
Activity 2, be able to use one, analyze the
components and indicate it based on the

PROPOSED TITTLE: "The Influence of Parental

Involvement on Students' Academic
Performance in Elementary Education".
04

I. Context and Rationale (Background of the

Study):

Parental involvement in education has long been

recognized as a critical factor in shaping students'
academic success, particularly in elementary
education. Numerous studies highlight the
multifaceted impact of parental involvement on
various aspects of a child's academic performance,
socio-emotional development, and overall well-
being.
04

Research by Epstein (2001) emphasizes the importance

of parental involvement in fostering a positive home-
school partnership, creating a supportive learning
environment. Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler (1995)
proposed a theoretical model that elucidates the
pathways through which parental involvement influences
students' academic outcomes, suggesting that it
operates through mechanisms such as parental beliefs,
behaviors, and student motivation.
04

Moreover, studies like Fan and Chen (2001) and

Jeynes (2007) offer insights into the specific ways in
which parental involvement, including communication
with teachers, participation in school activities, and
assistance with homework, contributes to enhanced
academic performance.
04

However, the literature also acknowledges the need for

context-specific research, considering the diverse
backgrounds and circumstances of families. This
action research aims to delve into the dynamics of
parental involvement in a specific elementary
education setting, exploring its nuances and examining
how various forms of parental engagement impact
students' academic performance.
04
II. Action Research Questions:

1. What is the level of parental involvement in students'

academic activities in elementary education?
2. How does parental involvement impact students'
academic performance in elementary education?
3. What are the barriers and facilitators to parental
involvement in students' academic activities?
4. How can interventions be designed to improve
parental involvement and subsequently enhance
students' academic performance?
04
III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention Strategy:

The proposed innovation and intervention strategy for this action

research is to implement a comprehensive parental involvement
program in elementary schools. This program will involve various
strategies to engage and support parents in their children's
education. These strategies may include regular communication
channels with parents, workshops and training sessions for
parents on effective ways to support their children's learning, and
creating a welcoming and inclusive school environment that
encourages parental participation.
04

IV. Action Research Methods:

a. Participants/other sources of data:

• The participants for this action research will include

parents of elementary school students and teachers.
Other sources of data may include academic records
of students, surveys or questionnaires, and interviews
with parents and school staff.
04
b. Data gathering methods:
1. Surveys or questionnaires: Parents can be asked to complete
surveys or questionnaires that assess the level of their involvement
in their children's education, their perceptions of the impact of
parental involvement on academic performance, and their barriers
to involvement.
2. Interviews: In-depth interviews can be conducted with a sample
of parents and school staff to gain insights into their experiences,
perspectives, and recommendations regarding parental
involvement and academic performance.
3. Academic records: Academic records of students can be
collected to analyze the correlation between parental involvement
and academic performance.
04
c. Data analysis plan:

The gathered data will be analyzed using both quantitative and

qualitative methods. Quantitative data from surveys and academic
records will be analyzed using statistical techniques such as
correlation analysis to determine the relationship between parental
involvement and academic performance. Qualitative data from
interviews will be analyzed thematically to identify recurring themes
and patterns related to parental involvement and its impact on
academic performance.
