Research Methodology (2-0-0-2-2)

Course Overview

P.Sreenivas
Asst.Professor, Department of Computer Applications
Research Methodology – Course Overview

The course is designed to support students in developing their

research projects and to assist them in defining their mode of
enquiry.

It will give students a general introduction to research, its

methodologies, challenges and way of conduction.
Research Methodology – Course Overview

 Students will be equipped to plan and organise their

research, as well as to communicate their findings.

Prerequisite: Knowledge of evaluation

Research Methodology – Importance

“If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn’t be called research,

would it?”

Albert Einstein
Research Methodology – Overview

These days, quite often, people are talking about research

both in academic institutions and outside in industry.

In most cases, very little attention is paid to an important

dimension relating to research i.e. research methodology.
Research Methodology – Overview

To solve the difficulties coming in the way of Research is the

main work of designing a methodology.

It is necessary not just to identify the problem for Research

but to determine the best method to solve that problem as
well.
Research Methodology – Importance

For example to understand: the person who is researching need

not just to know how to calculate mean etc. for a set of data, or
how to find a solution of a physical system, or how to find the
roots of algebraic equations but also need to know-

(i) a suitable method for the decision problem.

(ii) the order of accuracy of the outcome of a way for the

problem.

(iii) the efficiency of the way.

What is Research??

There are lot of definitions with lots of buzzwords

endless, sometimes painful, convincing, experimental,

findings, consistent, analysis, implications, publish, statistics,
never perfect, boring, time consuming, experts, unpredictable
What is Methodology??

 A specific way or method for performing process.

 An organized, documented, set of procedures and guidelines

 A step-by-step approach for carrying out the procedure.

What is Research Methodology??

 Methods to collect data, and the concepts and theories which

underlie the methods.

 A scientific and systematic way to solve research problem

using various logical steps.
Research Methodology

Course Objectives:

 Cobj1: Understand research methodology

 Cobj2: Explain and prepare the key elements of a research proposal

Cobj3: Understand the different ways of data collection

 Cobj4: Guide the way to conduct research

 Cobj5: Learn the art of report writing

Course Outcomes:
At the end of the course, student should be able to:
CO1:Demonstrate knowledge processes of research
 CO2: Articulate the research problem and design a research proposal.

 CO3: Investigate and gather requirements for the research.

 CO4: Conduct research and observe the findings.

 CO5: Communicate the research findings
