Permanent Mandibular

Lateral Incisors

DR. FAIZA GULFAM

Introduction
 Arch position: second tooth from midline in each lower
quadrant
 Mesial contact : central incisor
 Distal contact :
Initial - deciduous mand canine
Later - permanent canine
 Universal number :
Mandibular Right Lateral Incisor # 26
Mandibular Left Lateral Incisor #23
 Eruption age : 7 - 8 years
 Slightly larger in all aspects than mandibular central
incisor
 Function : complements central incisor in its function
Mandibular Lateral and Central
Incisor – A Comparison
Labial Aspect
 Incisal margin slopes slightly gingivally towards distal
 Distoincisal angle more rounded – shorter distal margin
than mesial
 Contact area on distal is more cervically located
 heights of contour are still in incisal third

Distal
Mesial
Lingual Aspect

 Lingual outlines are similar to those of labial aspect

 Structures of lingual surface are similar to their
counterparts on the central incisor
 Exceptions
Mesial Distal
• Cingulum is more offset to distal
• Curvature of cervical line is also offset distally

Mesial and Distal Aspects MESIA
L

DISTA
 Similar to their counterparts on central incisor L
 Exceptions
o Lateral's distal surface is slightly shorter inciso-
cervically than mesial surface
o Both cervical line curvatures are slightly less than
their counterparts in the central
MESIA
L

DISTA
o At distal contact area, height of contour is more L
cervically located than on mesial
o Mesial cervical line shows greater incisal curvature
than does the distal
o In incisal third, distal contact area is very near to
junction of incisal & middle thirds & is most
cervically located of any mandibular incisor
contact
Incisal Aspect
 Incisal edge is not straight mesiodistally, as it is in central,
rather it curves toward lingual in its distal portion
 cingulum appears displaced toward distal
 Appearance of crown slightly twisted on root
 Best differentiating feature b/w central and lateral

M D

Lingual
Root

 Slightly greater than central incisor in

o Length
o Thickness
o Width
 Root concavities on distal and mesial - pronounced in
distal
 Anomalies are rare
 Occasionally a bifurcated root may be seen
