By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to;

1  identify and define regular and irregular polygons.

2  accurately draw polygons with 5, 6, 8, and 10 sides

using a ruler and protractor; and,

3 describe the properties of these polygons, including side

lengths and angles.
INTRODUCTION TO
P O L Y G O N S

Have you ever looked closely at the shapes around you? Many
objects we see every day are made up of polygons. A polygon is
a closed, two-dimensional shape with straight sides. In this
lesson, we'll dive into the fascinating world of regular and
irregular polygons and discover their unique features and
properties.
WHAT IS A
P O L Y G O N ?

Before we start, let's make sure we

understand what a polygon is:

• A polygon is a closed shape

• It has straight sides
• It's a flat, two-dimensional figure

Some examples of polygons you might

recognize are triangles, squares, and
octagons (like a stop sign).

What Makes a Polygon Regular?

A regular polygon is special because:
1. All its sides are equal in length
2. All its interior angles are equal in measure
Think of a square - it has four equal sides and four equal angles.
That's why a square is a regular polygon.
EXAMPLES OF REGULAR
P O L Y G O N 5
Here are some common regular polygons:
1. Equilateral triangle (3 sides)
2. Square (4 sides)
3. Regular pentagon (5 sides)
4. Regular hexagon (6 sides) 4
5. Regular octagon (8 sides)

Regular polygons have some cool properties:

• They are symmetrical - you can fold them in half multiple
ways
• They have a center point that's the same distance from all
vertices (corners)
• You can draw a circle that touches all the vertices
(circumscribed circle)
• You can draw a circle that touches all the sides (inscribed
circle)
IRREGULAR

What Makes a Polygon Irregular?

An irregular polygon is different from a regular polygon because:
• Its sides are not all equal in length, OR
• Its angles are not all equal in measure (or both)

Most polygons we see in everyday life are actually irregular!

EXAMPLES OF IRREGULAR
P O L Y G O N

Here are some examples of irregular polygons:

1. A rectangle that isn't a square
2. A trapezoid
3. Most pentagons or hexagons you might draw freehand
PROPERTIES OF IRREGULAR
P O L Y G O N

Irregular polygons have their own interesting properties:

• They can have a mix of different side lengths

• Their angles can vary in measure
• They might have some symmetry, but not as much as
regular polygons
• They can be concave (have an "dent" in them) or
convex (all angles point outward)
Comparing Regular and Irregular
P O L Y G O N

Let's look at some key differences:

1. Symmetry: Regular polygons have multiple lines of

symmetry, while irregular polygons may have few or none.
2. Predictability: You can easily calculate the angles and side
lengths of regular polygons using formulas. Irregular polygons
require measuring each side and angle individually.
3. Real-world examples:
• Regular: Stop signs, honeycomb cells, soccer ball panels
• Irregular: Puzzle pieces, leaves, most building floor plans
Fun Facts About
P O L Y G O N

1. The word "polygon" comes from Greek: "poly" means

many, and "gon" means angle.
2. There are infinitely many regular polygons! You can keep
adding sides to make new ones.
3. Some regular polygons, like pentagons, can create
beautiful patterns called tessellations that cover a surface with
no gaps.
4. Irregular polygons can be more challenging to work with in
math, but they're often more useful in real-world design and
architecture.
P O L Y G O N ACTIVITY TIME!!!

1.Guided Drawing Activity: Demonstrate how to draw a regular pentagon

using a ruler and protractor on the board.

2.Independent Practice: Provide students with graph paper and have

them draw regular polygons (pentagon, hexagon, octagon, and decagon)
based on specific side lengths and angles.

3.Irregular Polygon Exploration: Ask students to modify one of their

regular polygons to create an irregular polygon by changing one or more
side lengths or angles.
P O L Y G O N REAL-LIFE USES
P O L Y G O N REAL-LIFE USES

Project-Based Learning: Divide students into small groups and assign a

project to design a simple structure (like a park, building, or piece of
artwork) using both regular and irregular polygons. Each group will
present their design and describe the polygons used, including their
properties.

Reflection and Sharing: Have students reflect on what they learned and
share their designs with the class. Encourage them to discuss the
challenges they faced and how they overcame them.
