compare?

Success criteria: I can Vocabulary

 Describe the properties of metals • Lustrous • Conductor
 Describe the properties of non-metals • Dull • Insulator
 Identify an element as metal or non- • Malleable

CLASSIFYING
ELEMENTS
When classifying elements, the most important distinction is whether
they are metals or non-metals.
From the text and figures on pp 53-54 and p 57 of your textbook
1. List and define the properties of metals
2. List and define the properties of non-metals
ARRANGEMENT OF THE
PERIODIC TABLE
1. Look at the elements you identified as metals. Whereabouts
on the periodic table are they located?
2. Look at the elements you identified as non-metals.
Whereabouts are they located?
3. With reference to the wall chart periodic table in your book,
colour your periodic table to show the metals and non-
metals
METALS, NON-METALS AND
METALLOIDS IN THE
PERIODIC TABLE
METALLOIDS
The elements that are neither metals nor non-metals are known
as metalloids.
1. Write the definition of metalloid in your book.
2. Colour your periodic table to show the metalloids.
GRAPHIC ORGANISOR
Complete the graphic organisor
PROPERTIES OF METALS
AND NON-METALS
There are eight samples of elements around the room

1. Examine each sample and record its properties

2. Based on your observations, determine whether the sample

is a metal or non-metal

3. Locate and highlight the element on the periodic table (over
